How was your weekend? Mine was pretty great, since it was basically 60 degrees this past Saturday! It reminded me that spring is actually coming sooner than we think, which is always reassuring here in arctic Chicago 😉
In other news, I’ve received quite a few questions from you guys about my skincare routine–specifically, the products I use for anti-aging, to fight breakouts, and so on. Here’s what I’ve been using and loving lately, and what I apply before bed each night. Some products are new, and some I’ve been using for years. Do you use any of these favorites?
Step 1: Remove makeup
This is a step a lot of people skip, but when you think about it, it’s really one of the most important. Do you really want to “wash” your face with grimy, day-old makeup being crammed into your pores? No! Remove it first, and then follow with a face wash second.
There are two ways I like to remove my makeup, sometimes it just depends on the preference, where I am, and what I have on hand. I always keep a jar of cold cream in the shower (I usually shower at night, so this is often where the makeup removal/face washing process takes place). I love it because it’s a great moisturizer, but it also removes makeup like magic. Really, I don’t know where it goes, it just evaporates. On the flip side, I will also often use facial wipes to remove makeup–it really just depends on where I am, and what’s more convenient at the time.
Step 2: Wash/Exfoliate
Depending on how my skin is acting, I’ll exfoliate one of two ways. If it’s acting up, I’ll use my Proactive exfoliating face wash. But if it’s a good skin week, I’ll use my Clinique sonic brush with the accompanying foaming face wash. I cannot say enough amazing things about this combo–it gives you a really amazing deep clean. (You can read more about that here.) I really think this, along with a combination of the anti-aging serum I’ve been using lately has made a huge difference in my skin. (More on that below.)
Step 3: Serum it up
Dark spot removal: To help minimize dark spots caused by years of terrible breakouts on the sides of my face, I use Clinique’s serum. It really does work, and is a great moisturizer in the process!
Anti-aging face: I’ve been using BareMinerals Skinlongevity for the past several weeks and I really like it. It’s definitely made my skin tone more even, helped clear my breakouts, and minimized fine lines. It also comes in a really big bottle, so you get a lot for the money!
I’ve also used Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair in the past with similar outstanding results. I’m in the early stages of the whole anti-aging thing, so I’m trying to figure out what works best for me. I’d definitely recommend either!
Anti-aging eyes: After scouring reviews on Sephora.com I decided to give their namesake age defying eye cream a try, and I really love the results. I can easily see a difference if I forget to use it for a few days. This was my first eye cream I’ve ever purchased, and I’ve been using it for about 6 months. I also want to try out some of Mario Badescu’s products because Blair and Shaheen have been raving about them!
Moisturizer: I typically follow with my Proactive moisturizer to help keep my skin clear. You can read more about my experience with Proactive here, but a quick update–while it absolutely helped clear up my skin, I noticed my skin started building up a tolerance to the three step process, so I now only use it when I truly need to control my breakouts. Luckily, my skin has been great lately, so I haven’t needed to use the three-step products too much.
Finish with Lip Moisturizer
For years, my final step before bed has always been to apply Vaseline all over my lips to keep them moisturized and chap free. I keep a traditional jar stashed under my sink, but they recently came out with these adorable little retro lip balm tins (which you can snag at Target) which I love. They’re essentially long-lasting lip balm infused with Vaseline jelly, and I now have several tins scattered around various areas of the house and in different bags and purses. If my hands and cuticles are also dry, I’ll also put some of this magic stuff on them as well. I think this formula is really the best for staying on all night–I can still feel it on my lips in the morning! It’s also hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic and non-irritatating, which means it’ll never make you break out!
Side note: I’ve tried the original variety as well as the cocoa butter and aloe formulas, which all work great. My favorite though, for daytime, is their rosy lips variety, which has a light pink tint that feels amazing on your lips and also gives you the perfect natural hue and a bit of glossy shine.
What products do you incorporate into your nightly beauty routine?
