WOOOO after DAYS of having my site down, it’s FINALLY back up and running!!
Thank you guys so much for your patience!! The issue is fixed now and I got moved to a new hosting service (SiteGround, if you’re wondering!) so I’m hoping there will be no issues like that in the future. ?I’m just glad I didn’t lose any of my content. PHEW!
Anyway, I hope you’re having a great week so far! Do you have your coffee poured? Because we’re back with another Ask Jess! Excited to dive into 5 more reader questions today. Ready? Let’s go!
Tips for soon to be college grads on life after college/ the Chicago job market?
I haven’t had a corporate job in like 5 years so I can’t comment on the CURRENT Chicago job market, haha! but in general, I would just focus on getting your foot in the door in an industry you think you want to work in, and then do everything you can to make yourself indispensable. If you do that, you will be successful no matter what you decide to do in life! Also worth reading: My best networking advice.
Also, HAVE FUN. Looking back, I loved my post-college years even more than I loved college. It’s such an exciting time in your life–don’t take it for granted! (But at the same time don’t be dumb with your money and rack up credit card debt.) Also worth reading: Advice to my twenty something self.
One more thing to remember: It’s okay if you don’t know what you want to do with the rest of your life. That’s how it’s supposed to be. Just jump in head first and you’ll figure it out. Sometimes the only way to figure out what you DO want is by ruling out what you DON’T want. If you see a sliver of opportunity, go after it! This is the best time to take calculated risks when you have nothing at stake! Shoot for the moon–why not? You can do it!
Favorite red nail polish?
I pretty much exclusively wear Essie’s Gel Couture polish in “Flashed” (orangey red) or “Rock the Runway” (cooler red). Make sure to get the color + top coat! It’s the best at-home polish. I also recently tried Côte nail polish–which is a clean brand! I really loved the color and I thought it stayed on pretty well (not as good as the Essie one, but better than normal nail polish, I thought!) They have some really pretty red shades!
What do I wear on casual Friday at a law firm? I can’t do a summer of jeans and button downs!
Everlane forever! This is why I love them so much–their staples are all so versatile and you can wear them for so many occasions. I know you don’t want to wear stuffy button-downs, but a linen or silk button down is just as cute with dark jeans for the office as it is with jean shorts or a skirt on the weekends. Also, I just ordered this linen popover which would be totally summer office appropriate! I really want this blue silk short sleeve button down too! They also have great dresses that would be ideal with a cardigan thrown over the top–like this one, this one or this one. That or a jumpsuit–I have Everlane’s new one on the way to test out! I’ll report back soon!
Tell us about The Wing!!
I LOVE IT! The Wing, if you don’t know–is a co-working and community space designed for women! With Neal’s new job, he can work from home a lot more, which has been great to have him there but also…distracting. ?So when The Wing opened in Fulton Market, I knew it was a perfect solution! They have locations all over! Highly recommend joining–it’s $185 a month and they have a cafe with delicious food, amazing wifi, phone booths to take calls, a conference room you can rent out, beautiful bathrooms with lockers and showers, and free drip coffee! The space is so cute and inspiring, I’ve been working there a few days each week!
What’s your workout routine? How do you stay so fit?
OK like 10 people ask this question every time I do an “Ask Me Anything” post–so let it be known that I don’t have a “workout routine” and being “fit” just for the sake of “being fit” isn’t ever the focus. (Okay except for my wedding because my dress was backless. ?)
In terms of working out, I go to Orangetheory and that’s it. (However, I went for the first time in a LONG time on Friday. Things have been so crazy lately I haven’t had time to work out.)
Full transparency–yes, I have a smaller frame, but it’s definitely not because I’m putting myself through grueling workouts in the gym every day–a lot of it is genetic. I say this because I don’t want to get credit for something I don’t deserve credit for. I’m the furthest thing from a gym rat that exists so when people ask “how do you stay so fit?” I cringe a little.
As long as I’m eating relatively healthy and getting into the gym semi-regularly that’s usually enough to maintain MY “healthy normal.” Everyone else’s “healthy normal” looks different–so I definitely think that when assessing that, you should always be measuring against your best self vs. against what somebody else looks like or says, you know?
I don’t own a scale, I don’t count calories. I focus on doing what I can with where I’m at–getting a good workout in a few times per week (sometimes there are seasons in my life to where that doesn’t happen for like, weeks at a time, but that’s okay! It’s life ?) and a focus on eating healthy meals at home during the week, and not depriving myself when I go out.
My goal is to maintain a place where I am happy and healthy. If my pants fit and I feel confident looking in the mirror, that’s all that matters!
If not, then it’s usually a sign that my health has fallen down in the list of priorities and I need to re-adjust. (Full transparency, that’s about where I’m at right now with my major workout hiatus I’ve taken, so getting to OTF more often is going to be a focus until I feel like my normal self again!)
