Wahooooo it’s the weekend! (Again! This week FLEW by, am I right?)
It’s been a little bit since our last Ask Jess, so I’m excited to answer a few more reader questions today! We’re tackling a whole bunch of topics, from my favorite quotes, to office wardrobe-building advice, travel plans for 2018, and more!
If you have a question to submit, make sure to fill out this form (it takes two seconds and can be totally anonymous!) No topic is off limits–ask away!
Okay, let’s jump into this week’s questions…
What are your favorite quotes?
Oh my goodness, this is a tough one! I feel like I could do a whole blog post just on my favorite quotes. A couple favorites that I have:
“Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right.” – Henry Ford
I love this quote and have always turned to it for inspiration again and again whenever I’m doubting my abilities to do something. It’s so true, I can attest to this advice first hand!
“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” – Teddy Roosevelt
I get a lot of emails from women who want to start a blog, but they’re overwhelmed at how much of an uphill climb they have in front of them–it’s a HUGE learning curve. You always compare your beginning to someone else’s middle. I always tell them this advice–you have to start somewhere–whatever it is, just START. Do what you can, with what you have, where you are. It’s a piece of advice that will never fail you.
“No matter what happens, the sun will come up tomorrow”– Barack Obama
I remember this speech that Obama gave after the election so vividly. We all know what he was talking about, but his words really resonated with me in a much larger way, and this is really how I try to view living life in general. Bad things happen. No matter how many personal battles you’re fighting, or what you’re going through, know that the sun will come up tomorrow. Life will go on. It helps put a lot of things into perspective.
I’m in the market for a new rain jacket–do you have a favorite?
My yellow rain jacket is a few years old so it’s not available anymore, but this one from Joules is so cute and very similar! I love the yellow color with the striped lining! It comes in lot’s of other colors too!
Also, I typically reach for my trench when it’s raining. It’s not totally waterproof (so I wouldn’t walk out in say, no umbrella with it like you can a rain coat) but it’s water resistant and I think the look of it is more chic than a rain coat! It’s made by London Fog, and they also make a waterproof rain coat here! It looks really cute too!
This waterproof rain trench made by North Face also looks super cute and their stuff is always great quality!
Any advice for a post-college grad shopping for a business wardrobe?
As much as possible, invest in pieces that you would wear in and outside of the office! Because they’re more versatile, you can afford to spend more on each piece because you aren’t essentially building two separate wardrobes. For example, if you’d only wear a pencil skirt at work, maybe don’t buy a pencil skirt, buy a dress that you can wear tights with to the office and wear out on a date with heels at night. Another tip–don’t buy too many items before you start your job and get a feel for the dress code. You don’t want to buy a bunch of stuff only to find the dress code is different than you thought it was! Every office is a little different
My favorite “wear anywhere” pieces that also work for the office: Everlane’s silk button down (Run TTS), Everlane’s “Easy” pants, a classic black shift dress (see my “How to wear a shift dress 4 ways” post for how to style it!) a cute blazer (like the one I wore in this post), Sam Edelman’s classic pumps and Everlane’s “Day” Heels. (Basically I’m a walking Everlane fanatic, can you tell? No they don’t pay me ?)
Do you have any upcoming travel plans for 2018?
Yes! We’re planning a big Italy trip at the end of June-Early July! I’m SO excited, I haven’t been there since I studied abroad in Florence and Neal has never been. I’m also going to Cabo with my besties for our BFF Michal’s 30th birthday in April. We’re going to Scottsdale to visit my best high school friend next weekend, and I may be making a quick last-minute trip to New York in a couple weeks for a work project! So much excitement happening! ??
Make sure to submit your Ask Jess questions over here and your question might be answered in the next Ask Jess post! Hope you have the BEST weekend!
