Did you have a good weekend?
Ours was action-packed, but so fun. We attended our friend’s comedy show on Friday, hung out with Kelly and Mitch and went to Danielle and Conor‘s post-wedding reception celebration on Saturday night, and grabbed dinner with Cassandra and her boyfriend Chris on Sunday!
It’s been awhile since our last “Ask Jess” post hasn’t it!? Thank you so much as always for submitting your questions!
Today, I’m answering five more reader questions about engagement gifts, moving to Chicago, my favorite luggage, OrangeTheory, and how to find a party dress on a quick timeline!
“Hi Jess! My friend got engaged and they’re having their engagement party at the end of the month. She’s the first to get engaged and I have no idea what an engagement gift looks like! Any ideas?”
I always think a nice bottle of champagne makes the perfect engagement gift. Everybody loves champagne, and it’s one of the few things that BOTH the bride and groom to be will love. Plus, everyone has such specific tastes, and your friends likely don’t have a registry set up yet, so you have no way of knowing what they’ll absolutely love. If you do want to get them something else, I’d recommend something small–like a ring dish, or Mr. and Mrs. coffee mugs.
“I just decided I’m moving to Chicago next Spring! Do you have any moving to Chicago tips?”
YAY! Such an exciting time! Well, my first one is to avoid moving in winter, if you can, haha! So you’re already ahead there! My next tip is to hire movers if you have furniture, because moving into city apartments is HARD. It’s always so much more complicated than you think it’s going to be, especially if you’re moving in to a high-rise and have to negotiate a certain window of time to use a freight elevator, etc. Also, if you’re moving stuff in and out of your car, you run the risk of SO MANY parking tickets.
For neighborhoods to live in, it really depends on what you’re looking for, but getting a real estate agent definitely helps. It’s completely free for you, too! If you need to be close to downtown for work, I loved living in the Gold Coast. You’ll get more for your money if you move west to Wicker Park or Logan, as well us north to Lakeview. I also love Lincoln Park and lived there for three years. I didn’t really love living in the West Loop, because there’s not really anything over there besides gourmet restaurants, but that’s just a personal preference.
“I’m thinking about buying the Delsey luggage that you’ve recommended and debating between colors. I love the white but am afraid it will get dirty fast! Has it been hard to keep the white looking good?”
AHH my favorite thing everrrr is my Delsey suitcase. (Okay, I have a lot of favorite things, but, it’s really high up there. FYI I have the 21″ carry-on but they come in lot’s of sizes which you can shop here on Amazon.) I think it really comes down to whether or not you’re planning to check your suitcase or carry it on. I never had problems with it getting dirty until the one time I had to check it on our honeymoon and it was in rough shape afterword, but I took a sponge and some soapy hot water to it and it came right off! That’s the great thing about it–it’s hard sided, so you can wash it off. If you’re checking it often, I’d go with the brown color!
“Can you do a post on how you’re liking OrangeTheory? Are you still doing it post-wedding? Would love to try it out but curious as to what to expect”
I can definitely do a post with more details on it, but in short, I have never seen such fast, incredible results from a workout before. Seriously, I had been doing power yoga regularly for a couple of years and the results I got after just one month of Orange Theory were 10 times better than that. I cannot recommend it enough for a pre-wedding workout. I just wish I would’ve started it three months beforehand instead of just one. I had never planned on continuing after the wedding, but it’s definitely worth the $199 a month to keep my wedding body!!
“Help! I’m attending a last minute party in a few days and I have nothing to wear! Do you have any suggestions for dresses with super fast shipping?”
Yes! Shopbop is my go-to for super fast Prime shipping (or 3 day shipping if you don’t have Prime). They have so many cute cocktail dresses to choose from and are always getting lot’s of new styles in–I particularly love all of BB Dakota’s dresses right now and they are always so affordable! Yumi Kim is also another favorite, she makes the prettiest winter floral dresses right now! (Side note: as we ramp up for the holidays, Shopbop is also my favorite place to shop for last-minute holiday gifts–they have lot’s of adorable gifts under $50 and they have a lot of great gift guides on this section of their site!) Here are a few more favorite dresses that you can get in just two days:
