Happy Tuesday from the real life set of Frozen! ???
I hope you’re reading this from somewhere warm and cozy, because it is ICY here in Chicago, which makes it perfect timing for this post in particular! (I’m very excited to head to AZ next week to get out of this weather! YIKES!)
If you follow me on Instagram stories, you’ll know that I’ve been
talking *raving excessively* about one specific product–a magical potion called the “Overnight Resurfacing Peel“–so I thought it deserved its own post because I think the topic of a “peel” is really alarming to some people–I’ve received a lot of questions, so I’m going to answer them all in one place!
If you’re like me and the Polar Vortex has been wreaking havoc on your skin and making it dead as a doornail (I just opened my mouth and my mother came out. Who says “dead as a doornail!?” these days?!)––you will love this product!
What it does: It works overnight to gently exfoliate and reveal a brighter complexion the next day. It reduces fine lines, helps improve skin texture, and even out skin tone, reducing redness and dark spots. It helps prevent breakouts and clear up existing ones.
My experience and results:
If you want to check out my results, click here to watch my Instagram story I filmed on it recently!
The background: I have tried out several types of acid products and found that they have been too harsh on my skin. (Drunk Elephant’s babyfacial being one of them. It works SO WELL for so many people, and if it works for you, that’s amazing. I definitely don’t want to knock it and I think the company is great and makes some great products, but it left my skin so red hot, enflamed, and itchy, it really wasn’t for me. I was crushed because you hear such good things! ?)
To be honest, I never spoke publicly about my reaction to it until recently because skincare is very personal, and I don’t ever want to deter someone from buying a product that might be great for them just because it didn’t work for me PERSONALLY (plus, I don’t like to publicly say negative things about brands that I like and know are fantastic brands) BUT, I thought it was important to note here to give you a full picture, and for those with sensitive skin to understand that this product is definitely worth trying if others haven’t worked for you in the past.
I was about to give up on the whole “magical acid product” movement, thing, whatever you’d like to call it–– and a few months back and decided I would give Beautycounter’s a shot, since it’s one of my favorite brands and the one skincare brand I’ve had the most luck with.
This product is LIFE CHANGING.
I didn’t react at all–and I saw results the first time I used it! It’s made my skin much more even, it reduces leftover red/dark marks from breakouts–I swear it makes my fine lines less noticeable. I’ve been using it ever since and it’s been a game-changer to say the least. I’ve also received so many DM’s from you guys feeling the same way! ??Here’s one I received last night:
“Just wanted to tell you I tried the Beautycounter Overnight Peel and I’m IN LOVE. IT’S AMAZING! I used it one night and saw a difference the next morning. Twice in one week and my skin doesn’t feel winter dull anymore. You’ve absolutely made me a huge fan!”
Why it’s different: It has 15 botanically derived acids, which are a combination of resurfacing acids AND soothing acids.
(I guess before using this product, I never stopped to think about how there are harsher acids vs. soothing acids–but it makes a lot of sense!) It’s gentle enough for sensitive skin and powerful enough for those that need more of a workhorse product. Here are some of the star ingredients that will help explain the results you’ll get!
Key ingredients that will transform your skin:
Glycolic acid: Probably one you’ve heard of before, right? It’s lauded as one of the best products for exfoliation, and effectively removes the outermost layer of dead cells from the skin–revealing a brighter, fresher, glowing complexion.
Ascorbic acid: A form of Vitamin C, known for it’s ability to stimulate collagen–meaning it helps tighten and firm the skin, and can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles. It also is an antioxidant, reducing damage on a cellular level.
Lactic acid: Typically derived from milk (it was rumored that Cleopatra used to bathe in spoiled milk for the Lactic Acid benefits!) but in this case it’s derived from fermented sugar cane, so it’s vegan! Lactic acid is a true multi-tasker, gentle, but effective—it helps strengthen the skin’s protective barrier, improves moisture retention and texture, and reduces pigmentation in the skin.
Phytic acid: A plant extract that is extremely effective when paired with Glycolic acid at reducing pigmentation, and is especially effective on melasma! It also reduces the appearance of pores and targets blackheads.
Malic acid and Tartaric acid–both of these acids are derived from apples in this formula (although tartaric is often derived from wine!) These are also lauded for anti-aging effects, exfoliation, reducing fine lines, and stimulating ceremide production. Ceremides–or, lipids (aka fat molecules) that help restore the skin’s moisture barrier–are important in keeping your skin well-hydrated and soft!
Unlike other acids which can alter your skin’s pH level, Tartaric acid helps to regulate your skin’s pH–making it VERY helpful for those with sensitive skin who might have adverse reactions to other acid products.
Salicylic acid: As you’ve probably heard, it works very well for resurfacing and for treating blemishes!
Perhaps this reason I think this product works so well (although, it’s just a guess!) for me where others have failed, is because there are a number of soothing acids in this peel that sooth skin after the stronger acids have done their job.
Hyaluronic acid: The most notable soothing acid for all skin types–it’s well-known for good reason! Hyaluronic acid is a humectant–aka, it’s moisture-binding, so it’s very effective in restoring moisture to the skin, making it appear more plump, soft, and healthy.
Argonine: An amino acid that is especially excellent at repairing the restoring the skin and reducing inflammation.
Fatty acids: including omegas 3 & 6, maintain skin’s barrier to prevent moisture loss, smooth skin, and provide antioxidant benefits. These are also very helpful for those with enflamed skin, rosacea, etc.
How do you apply it? At nighttime, apply 1-2 pumps to your face before your moisturizer. Let sink in for 3-5 minutes, and follow with your moisturizer or night cream. Make sure *not* to get it around your under eyes–that skin is too thin and sensitive. Also, this should only be applied at night, because exposure to light might make you extra sensitive!
How often to apply it? I recommend seeing how the first application goes. I think it’s always best to start out one night the first week, and gradually increase it. For sensitive skin, I think twice a week is good. For those without sensitive skin, 3-4 nights per week is recommended.
What should I expect?: It will feel tingly when you apply it, and it will make your face a bit red as it’s bringing blood to the surface. This means its working! It shouldn’t HURT and the tingle won’t last more than a minute or two. Remember, this is a reactive product, so if you have anything bad under the skin, it will definitely bring that to the surface–so you may see some purging after the initial use. (Although I’ve only heard that happening with a couple people!) Once that happens though, it should be smooth sailing from there!
If you’re like most people and your skin has been looking especially dull, you will likely see results after the first use, waking up to a more glowing, even complexion. It only gets better from there!
Should I use/avoid other products with it? I would avoid using any other reactive-type products (masks, reactive serums, etc) on the days you use the mask and perhaps alternate in between.
The term “Peel” scares me–will my face peel off!? No no, definitely not! This isn’t like a peel you’d get at the dermatologist or a med spa! You won’t have any peeling or anything like that. Your skin will feel super soft and exfoliated!
Have you tried it yet!? Would love to hear your thoughts if you have!
