How are you doing this Tuesday!?
It’s another sunny day here in Chicago, which I am SO grateful for!
While I’m on the kick of refreshing my most helpful content for quarantine, I figured it was about time for a Spring Cleaning post, after getting a few questions on my favorite organizing products. (It seems like you guys are more on your A-game than I am. I haven’t mustered up the energy to tackle any organizing projects…yet. 😜Maybe this week will be the week?)
Here in Chicago, we’re teetering on the edge of “swapping out your clothes” season, so I thought it was the perfect time to give this organizing post from last year a refresh!
So many of us are city dwellers that do not have the luxury of things such as “pantries” (what are those?) or “linen closets” or–gasp–”LAUNDRY ROOMS.” I often get asked for my tips on keeping my *lacking in closet space* house from looking like an episode of hoarders.
I will admit, even for someone who is an avid hater of “stuff,” somehow, my house is still always cluttered with it. (You too?) It doesn’t help that I am essentially a walking tornado. (I know, I know. It’s something I’m working on.) But even so, there are definitely some improvements and upgrades I’ve made over the past couple of years that have made a WORLD of difference. If you’re looking to do some major organizing at home right now, these products are key!
My Favorite Home Organizing Products
Scarf and Underwear organizers:
I CANNOT TELL YOU how much these things have transformed my underwear drawer and my scarves (which used to just be a giant tangled nest). This incredibly simple contraption will transform your scarf nest into scarf paradise, and also keep your underwear drawer from being a mess of chaos. These would work great for socks, or guys’ ties as well! They’re from The Container Store for under $14 each!
Elfa Door Racks:
HUGE. HUGE. Shout out to Shellie and Hannah from Chicago Organized Home for introducing me to these magical Elfa Door Rack Shelves from The Container Store. They are modular and you can customize them for whatever you need–plus, they’re removable so you can take them with you if you move! (Perfect for renters!)
I literally cannot even express how much these things have changed our lives. Remember when I told you that we have no closet space? These have added an INFINITE amount of storage. We have one on my closet door and one in the laundry closet–it holds all our laundry and cleaning supplies! It has turned our hobbit hole laundry closet into actually usable space. We also have one for our utility closet that holds tools, nails, paint brushes, and other odd things that were impossible to organize! I also have one for shoes on the back of our bedroom door, in addition to the one pictured above on my closet door!
They’re definitely not super cheap–but I don’t think they’re crazy expensive either–depending on how you customize it, they start at about $100 each–and they are worth every penny.
Space bags are a must-have for anyone who has a lot of coats. (Hello, Chicago winter!) Put your giant winter coats in these and they shrink into nothing! Actually, not just coats–we put all of our out of season clothes in space bags. They easily pack into bins or under the bed, and are such game-changers!
I think this needs to be a requirement for every adult human. These hangers go THE FURTHEST in making your closet organized and KEEPING it that way. Swear off those horrific wire hangers once and for all. (You know, the ones from the dry cleaners that make your closet look like a rats nest even when it’s organized?) These hold your clothes on the hangers (no more slipping) and actually save a lot of space, so you can fit a lot more in your closet easily! They sell them at both Bed Bath and Beyond, The Container Store, (both of which I have) and also on Amazon!
I realize an expensive vacuum is the last thing some people need to be spending money on right now, BUT, I know a lot of you are engaged, and when people ask me what to register for when getting married, my #1 recommendation is THE DYSON VACUUM. (So if you’ve got some wedding $$ to spend, girl, screw the fancy dishes––GET THIS VACUUM!)
I never in a million years would have dreamed a vacuum could bring me so much joy. Or make such a difference in my life. This is the only vacuum we own and it’s so lightweight–it’s easier than sweeping and makes cleaning our house a breeze. (It comes with different attachments for hardwood and rugs!) Our floors get so dusty and I pull this thing out multiple times per week. Especially now that we are home 24/7, I feel like we’re cleaning a lot more than usual! It takes literally 5 minutes to speed-clean to get things back to acceptable levels of cleanliness. Add this to your registry ASAP if you haven’t already!
If you aren’t engaged or newly married and don’t have wedding cash to burn, I would highly recommend keeping an eye out at Bed Bath and Beyond, because sometimes they’ll run Dyson specials. (Plus, you know, they always mail out those coupons!) However, it looks like Amazon does have a few models at $100 off right now! Walmart also sells refurbished models for a great price–mine is $299 refurbished. An investment but SO worth it!
You know that one utensil drawer in your kitchen you can never open because a whisk or spatula or potato masher gets stuck and you just give up? It doesn’t have to be that way.
First, purge any utensils you haven’t used in a year or anything that is gross and stained–(if you need to replace anything, we got almost all our utensils at Bed Bath and Beyond!) then, do yourself the biggest favor ever and get these customizable drawer dividers–you don’t have to worry if your drawers have weird dimensions, because you just measure, snap ’em to your desired length, and then custom fit them however you’d like! They’re so inexpensive!
Tupperware lid organizer
Everyone’s archnemesis seems to be the Tupperware drawer, am I right? I have one great solution: a lid organizer! (Note this photo is several years old, so the exact one you see here isn’t available–but this one is and it has great reviews!) Super affordable, and will make a huge difference! (While you’re at it, get rid of any containers you haven’t used in a while. Nobody needs 25 random tupperwares! Need to replace? Consider glass instead!)
Pretty laundry basket:
It took me 29 years of my life to finally invest in a grown-up laundry basket, but it makes a HUGE difference in feeling like your bedroom is pulled together and organized! I always hated looking at an old plastic laundry basket in the corner. The one I have is from Wayfair and a few years old at this point, but they have tons of similar ones! Ikea has a similar one for only $39! This one from The Container Store is also $39! Now it makes me happy (even when the laundry is piling up 😜) so while you’re swapping out your clothes, consider giving your laundry basket an upgrade!
