“The perfect jeans.”
Ah, what a loaded phrase! ?
Does such a thing even exist? For some, it may seem like finding a needle in a haystack. Of course, I have MY favorite pairs–but I’m only one person, and I only have one body type. How could that possibly be of THAT much help on the never-ending “perfect jean” hunt?
Then I had an idea. LET’S DO A REAL WOMEN APPROVED JEANS EDITION! So I took to Instagram, and asked what YOUR favorite pair was, along with your body type. We got HUNDREDS of submissions–and I set out to create what is *hopefully* one of my most helpful posts to date.
Well–it ended up taking a little bit longer than I thought–months, actually. We’re talking several full days of work coming through, organizing, categorizing submissions, and of course, LINKING all of them.
But–it’s finally here! I hope you love it and that it helps end your search for the perfect fit jeans, once and for all. First, a few tips before we dive in!
How To Find The Best Jeans For Your Body Type
1. Embrace trial + error and take advantage of free shipping + returns
I know, its a pain, testing and trying out so many pairs–but it’s worth the trial and error period to find that PERFECT pair that gives you that PERFECT fit. A way to make this a bit easier is to look for free shipping and great return policies wherever possible–that’s why I love Nordstrom and Shopbop in particular!
Also, it’s always worth buying two sizes if you’re typically in-between, especially during sales, when the most popular pairs often sell out quickly! Lord + Taylor is actually a great place to hunt for premium denim that is often on sale! (Right now they’re having a HUGE sale too!)
2. Don’t be afraid to visit a tailor
If you love a pair of jeans but they just need to be a LITTLE bit shorter, or taken in a tad–head to a tailor! It’s totally worth the extra investment to make sure they fit perfectly.
3. Be open to different cuts and styles
So often I talk to girls who say, “oh I could NEVER wear cropped straight leg jeans”––but here’s the thing, you don’t know until you try. I can’t tell you how many DMs I get from readers saying, “I NEVER would’ve considered that style before, but you convinced me to try them and I LOVE them! They’re so much more flattering than I would’ve imagined!” So don’t rule anything out! Keep an open mind!
4. Be ruthless with “like” vs “love”
I remember being in the Limited Too dressing room (?) buying clothes for my first day of school and my mom teaching me a very valuable shopping lesson: “If you don’t absolutely LOVE something–never, ever buy it” and that lesson always stuck with me.
If you buy something you don’t feel 110% amazing in, you’re never going to wear it. You never want to be pulling, yanking, tugging, or anything like that. If you have to hesitate to decide whether you like something–you don’t like it enough. Life’s too short to wear bad jeans!
Reader approved: The #1 best jeans for women of all shapes and sizes:
Okay, we’ll dive into a LOT more styles for each body type below per your reccos, but there is far and away a very clear winner in terms of WHERE to buy the best jeans and that was MADEWELL! (This didn’t surprise me one bit, because that’s where my favorite ZERO see through white skinnies are from!)
Madewell was your #1 destination of choice for flattering jeans for ALL different body types! Specifically, the Madewell high rise skinnies seemed to be super popular with readers no matter what shape or size they identified as. Why Madewell exactly?
Reader Caitie summed it up perfectly:
“They have sizes for everyone and the fits really look amazing on all body types. Also fun fact: if you bring in a pair of old jeans (any brand) to your local Madewell, you get $20 off a new pair!”
A second, popular, more budget-friendly option? Old Navy Rockstar Jeans! (You’ll see these popping up quite a bit below as well!)
So if you haven’t tried out Madewell or Old Navy, those are two great places to start! But let’s jump into more reccos by body type, shall we?
Here are the best “Real Women Approved” pairs to try, according to readers!
How to get the most out of this post:
Make sure to read through the whole post (not just what you would *classify* your body type as) because there is a lot of cross-over here and you will most likely fall under more than one category. I did my best to categorize each reader recco based on how you identified your features and what you struggle with most when shopping for jeans. Personally, I really loathe putting labels on bodies, but for the sake of this post, I thought it was most helpful to do this way!

FOR MY HOURGLASS SHAPED GALS
“I’m totally obsessed with Everlane’s high rise skinny ankle length. I’m 5’5″ and usually about a size 29 but find jeans rarely fit both my waist AND thighs….I’m a big bottomed girl with a waist that’s a bit slimmer than my lower half. Everlane fits like a dream, holds me in, and they don’t stretch out. Behind Everlane, I’m pretty addicted to Madewell 10″ High-Rise and Uniqlo’s High Rise Ultra Stretch Jean.” – Caroline
“I basically live in Madewell jeans because they are so comfortable! My all time faves are the 10” High-Rise Skinny Jeans in the Danny Wash. They are super stretchy which is a must for me for everyday wear, but they don’t lose their shape like a lot of stretchy jeans do. For a more trendy pair, I’m OBSESSED with Everlane’s kick crop jeans! I have them in two washes and I think they are the most flattering shape. At first I thought they were more of a spring/summer jean but this winter I paired them with ankle boots and it’s my new favorite combo!” – Lexi
“Madewell High-Rise Skinny Jeans, hands down. The 10″ rise is my favorite for super comfortable, everyday denim. I also own the High-rise Curvy style which have an 11″ rise. They really hold everything in and create a sleek shape when I want a dressed-up denim look, but I don’t find them AS comfortable as the 10″ skinny (aka I wouldn’t wear the curvy for a road trip/full day of traveling). I’m 5’8″, 150lbs, narrow waist with curvy hips/bottom and a long torso– the regular length hits right at my ankle bone. I own the 10″ high rise skinny in a dark wash, a medium wash, and the black wash and none of the coloring has faded with washing/general wear.” – Lindsey
“I second the high waist Old Navy Rockstar skinny jeans! Usually, I do a dark wash and also have a black pair, although the black ones are a bit more stretchy and I feel they lose their form quicker. These look good on those of us with hourglass shape. I also like them because they’re also on the affordable side” ? – Annie
“Madewell jeans are ?!!! I’m 5’5,” kind of hourglass shape with a bit of a butt and after finally investing in the 9” High-Rise Skinnies, I have fallen in LOVE. I also have the 10” High-Rise in Danny and the 9” in Berkeley Black with buttons and chewed hem. I got rid of all of my other jeans and just rotate through these buttery, stretchy, curve-flattering bbs. They’re tight but not so much that you can’t fit a pair of tights on underneath if you live in a polar vortex region ? and they have give for after big meals!!” – Hannah
“Madewell 10” high-rise jeans! I have an athletic build (aka small waist but a butt and thighs ?) and this is the ONLY pair of jeans I’ve found that stays up, fits in all the right places and isn’t $200+ dollars. I swear by these jeans!” – Sierra
FOR MY TALL LADIES
For my girls with long legs who have a hard time finding jeans that are long enough, while fitting everywhere else!
“Madewell and Everlane. (I’m 5’9 135ish lbs.) I love the high rise on both since I’m tall and the variety in washes and styles so if I find a pair I love- then I can buy them in every color and be happy? the only thing I struggle with is sizing with Everlane. Would love to hear others reviews on sizing and whether their specific styles were TTS or they had to size down. I’m typically a size 4 but in the Everlane The Edition 02 Wide Leg Crop Jean I have to order a 0!” – Addison
“Another person here that loves the Madewell 10″ High-Res Skinny Crop Jean: Button-Front Tencel Edition (important that it’s the Tencel kind!!). I usually HATE high rise jeans but these stretch to the point of comfort but not bagginess. I also love that they have tall and taller. I’m 5’11” and grab the taller so I don’t have cold ankles.” – Alexia
“Levi’s Mile High Super Skinny Jeans. They suck you in and they’re stretchy but don’t lose their shape! Great for girls with butts and smaller waists AND they come with longer inseams for tall girls like me! I’m a size 28×29 and I’m 5’9” and 155lbs!” – Bianca
“Madewell Curvy in tall! I’m lanky with an athletic butt but not with overly huge hips so I couldn’t figure out why regular jeans always looked terrible. Once I realized curvy is not about your body type per-say, but more about your butt/hip ratio to skinny part of your waist I have worn them ever since!” ?? – Becca
“I’m tall and on the curvy side, wearing usually an 8 or a 10. My favorite jeans are the LOFT Curvy Destructed Skinny Jeans. I am not a person who has success ordering jeans online and I ordered 2 pairs from LOFT (including those) and kept both pairs, which is honestly SHOCKING. They’re stretchy and soft but also make you feel held in with a mid-rise waistband. Also LOFT always has a sale going on which definitely helps!” – Zoe
FOR MY SHORTIES
“J Brand Natasha Sky High Skinny Jeans because even though I still have to hem them, they’re a great high waist that doesn’t consume my short torso. Also, love Levi’s Wedgie Fit Straight Jeans.” – Beck
“Madewell Petite 10” High-Rise Skinny Crop with the button front! I have CHICKEN LEGS and these somehow manage to fit my legs but not be ridiculously tight on my stomach when I’ve had too many TJ’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups—I think the buttons make them stretchier/more forgiving than a normal zipper?! I didn’t have to get them altered which is incredible! (I’m 5’2, 105ish, and the 25p is the perfect, ankle length fit!) But I also think Madewell jeans are the “sisterhood of the traveling pants” jeans because I have friends with all different body types who LOVE this style!” – Emma
“PAIGE Hoxton High Rise Ankle Jeans in Mona. These high waisted jeans are great for short, curvier women (I’m 5’3” and size 28). My thighs and butt are more muscular and these fit amazing – the stretch is just right and I can wear them multiple times. ONLY slight negative is that sometimes the dye rubs on my hands (I’ve found this with a ton of jeans though), it doesn’t stain anything else though. Would def recommend!” – Melanie
“The Old Navy Button-Fly Flare Ankle Rockstar Jeans are awesome if you want a trendy jean for an inexpensive price!! I have short stubby legs lol and they come high-waisted enough to not make me look short or cut my legs off in a weird way! They’re also so stretchy (great for gals w a butt) and sooo comfy. I wear them like every day!!” – Elizabeth
Speaking of Old Navy…
“I’m a size 16 but am also short and jean shopping can be a nightmare ? but I love Old Navy High-Rise Rockstar Jeans (that also come in petite plus sizes!)” – Michelle
“Abercrombie High Rise Super Skinny Jeans! I’m 5’2” and curvy. I typically have a really hard time with finding the right size in jeans, but the sizing is great for me! The ankle length is perfect for wearing with booties. The high rise is perfection ? I wear jeans everyday since my office is more casual and each pair of these are my go-to’s” – Grace
“J.Crew 9” High Rise Toothpick Jean – as a shorter (5’1”) woman with curves, these have been the most flattering on me. Their short inseam is ALWAYS perfect for my height.” – Kimmy
“My favorite jeans are the Old Navy High-Rise Rockstar Super Skinny Jean! I’m 5’6″ and 140 lbs (145 when I go on weekend wine and cheesecake binges) and being pear shaped – hellloooo hips – I always go a size up in lighter washes so I get an 8, but in dark wash jeans I go for a size 6. I’ve seriously bought jeans in every price range ($15-$100) and these are my tried and true favorites.” – Paisleigh (P.S. Did you read Paisleigh’s What I Wore to Work profile here?!)
“Everlane’s Authentic Stretch High Rise Cigarette Jean. They look great and have room in the waist, which is hard for me to find!” – Christina (Jess’ note: I also love these jeans and have a super hard time finding jeans that don’t gap at the waist, and these solve that issue for me too! They’re magical and seem to solve whatever issue you typically have with jeans because of their figure-hugging stretch!)
PLUS SIZE SPECIFICALLY
Note: You’ll find a lot of the jeans elsewhere in this post come in plus, but wanted to highlight these here as well for easy browsing because they seemed to stand out from the pack!
“Universal Standard’s Seine High Rise Skinny is the perfect dark wash. They come in multiple inseams, and are available in size 00 to size 40! They fit extremely well and have good stretch in them but don’t bag out and fall down. They’re also a true skinny and very high quality.”
Also–worth noting that a lot of the most popular styles listed above also come in plus sizes! Old Navy Rockstar Jeans, Madewell Jeans, American Eagle Jeans (especially the new Curvy Fit!) and Levis all over an awesome range of sizes.
Countless ladies have also praised Good American for being fantastic no matter what your size as well!
FOR THE BOOTY
“I swear by two: for casual/slouchy boyfriend style I wear JAG Carter Girlfriend Jeans and for everyday skinnies I love Banana Republic mid or high rise skinnies (love their new raw hems!!). For reference, I’m 5’6” & pretty slim but got a big ol’ booty that does not put up with most jeans. I get that fun lil kangaroo pouch in the back with most brands.” – Dara
“Love the American Eagle Mom Jean. They actually fit like a boyfriend jean on me which can be hard to find when you’re curvier/have a bigger butt!” – Kaitlin C
“Okay, I have a BIG ole booty. So does my sister. I always, ALWAYS had the back gap thing with any jeans I tried and just thought it was a normal thing I had to deal with. Old Navy Rockstar Jeans are fabulous for me. My sister recommended these to me in my early 20s and they’re life changing! I I also have really weird proportions and even though I’m 5’6’’ pants are always too long on me (short legs and tong torso). Their petite sizes are great for me; I literally never buy other jeans. Plus you can usually score them for like $20 since they go on sale so often.” – Hannah
LACKING IN THE BOOTY DEPARTMENT
“I definitely am not blessed in the booty department but I really like the Levi’s 721 High Rise Skinny Jean! They have several denim options but I like the ones with very little stretch!” –Chelsea
“Citizen of Humanity’s Rocket Skinny Jean are made for girls with no butt! It’s meant to give you shape!”
“Good American literally gives EVERYONE a butt! They are also great for curvy and plus-size ladies!” – Margaret
TO CREATE CURVES:
“I recently found Good American jeans. I have a straight up and down lower half and these hug me in all the right places, don’t fall off my butt and don’t stretch out. The high rise doesn’t choke my waist or leave a muffin top. And did I mention they are SOOO COMFORTABLE?! They are frequently on sale so the price point is good. And unlike many jean brands, they come in a wide variety of dark washes and light washes to revive my wardrobe. You can wear this line if you are 15 or 50.” – Lisa
MORE GENERAL LOVE:
This is where I’m putting the rave reviews of people who did not disclose their body type. ?
“Paige jeans have been my go to for years. The Transcend Margot High Waist Ultra Skinny are my most recent favorite. The denim is super soft and there is enough stretch but they don’t lose their shape when you wear them. The high waist is necessary when you sit at a desk all day and don’t want your pants digging into you.” ? – Jenny
“I swear by Madewell 9” High-Rise Skinny and all Paige black denim. Paige has somehow created a magical black jean that doesn’t fade!! I don’t know how but I’ve had my favorite pair of Paige jeans for 3 years and those bad boys are still the truest black I’ve ever had jeans stay!” – Emily
“My body has had LOTS of shapes and sizes. At my largest I was a 16 and now am a size 6. I have loved AG jeans through it all. I used to work at Anthro, so I fell in love at first try on. Anthro sizing is spotty with jeans but there are AG stores, Nordstrom, and other retailers. I love their Stevie cut and anything ankle for a short gal. Also, I have love Mothers once i got down to a size 10. I love any cut they have, especially if it’s their distressed denim.” – Marylynne
“I buy AG from Nordstrom. Specifically, I like the High Rise Farrah. I’ve tried Madewell and many other brands from Nordstrom but have since bought 5 pairs of AG HRF since discovering them. I find them to be so much more comfortable than other jeans I’ve purchased. I know many people of different body types that also swear by these jeans, including my mom and sister!” – Leanna
“Madewell Larkspur Tensel Edition, the PERFECT amount of stretch and I wore them everyday on a work trip that lasted 9 days and never had to wash them! They are the best everyday jean, an investment maybe but if you take a pair of your old jeans into Madewell (or J Crew) they recycle them and give you $20 off a new pair! These jeans have a great wash color and are so comfy too.” – Sara
“Huge fan of the American Eagle NE(X)T Level High Waisted Jegging you have recommended previously! I’m slim-ish, (5’6” size 4-6) and they are the best, affordable black jeans I have found! Also shoutout to the surprisingly great customer service I have received from AE! I have found their staff super helpful and great at recommending jeans if you give them some info on your preferences.” – Andie
Whew! That’s it! I hope this post was super helpful for you guys! What do you think? Do you have any favorite denim brands that are missing here?
