Things have been a little hectic over here with a half ripped out, non-functioning kitchen, detail coordinating for my birthday camping trip this weekend, and juggling multiple zoom calls. You know–the usual.
Today on IG stories, I highlighted some really awesome Black owned businesses to spend your dollars at today, but I decided that they needed to also be compiled in a blog post, since many of my blog readers would’ve missed them otherwise! (Plus, it makes it really easy to go back and reference later!) So-ta da-here we are!
I loved the idea of composing a summer “gift guide”–because I think we ALL deserve a little gift for making it more than halfway through 2020 at this point, right? Plus, it’s so important to celebrate the little things, AND to support Black owned businesses (especially Black WOMEN owned businesses) at the same time!
I would’ve never discovered some of these shops if you all hadn’t shared them with me, so thank you! Additionally, I also have to thank the awesome Instagram account @Black.Owned.Everything for introducing me to many others! I highly recommend giving them a follow!
Whether you’re looking for a lovely pick-me-up for yourself, the perfect special gift for a recently engaged friend, a new mom–whatever–I think you’ll find something you love below!
Black Owned Brands Summer Gift Guide:
New Origin Shop Handwoven Totes
I have fallen in LOVE with all the beautiful items from Austin-based New Origin Shop! Sierra Lewis’ joyfully curated shop prioritizes products with low environmental impact, yet make big contemporary statements! It’s hard to choose any favorite, but I’m particularly drawn to the shop’s selection of beautiful handwoven basket bags. Perfect for a trip to the beach or picnic in the park!
Geometric ceramic mug
Okay, so yeah I couldn’t choose–you got me! Also from New Origin Shop, I just love this happy geometric mug! It will go perfectly with a delicious coffee from one of the shops highlighted further down 😉
Gilded Body Marble body brush:
Body brushing has so many great detoxing benefits. This stunning marble body brush would be the perfect way to treat yourself, or the perfect gift for the girlfriend that has everything! Beautiful AND functional!
54 Kibo Appetizer plates
54 Kibo stocks beautiful, one of a kind contemporary African home goods, and I’m not exaggerating when I say you will get lost for hours in their website. I loved these ceramic appetizer plates–they are so unique, and would make a great gift for your newlywed girlfriend or anyone who loves to entertain!
Woo Me Beauty Nail Growth Serum
I just ordered this non-toxic serum today because my nails are still reeling from my back to back dip manicures pre-Pandemic! They need some major TLC! It’s still available for pre-order! It’s also bitter flavored so it’ll prevent you from biting your nails! 😆 Genius!
54 Kibo Organic baby swaddles:
Another great find from 54 Kibo, and a great gift for a new mom! These soft organic cotton swaddles are the only baby wraps on the market inspired by contemporary African design and tradition. I love that the black and white tones and geometric shapes are gender-neutral!
Two Days Off breezy linen basics:
I did a rabbit-hole deep dive on this amazing company today and I cannot wait to get my hands on some of her items! The founder, Gina Stovall, is a former climate scientist turned entrepreneur. I signed up for the waitlist to be notified as soon as this pretty linen tank drops!
Vintage Royalty earrings
I know I’m a broken record, but I haven’t stopped wearing my Vintage Royalty earrings since I go them! It’s hard to find affordable statement earrings that are super lightweight and don’t irritate my ears–and these are both! I love her designs so much! (And many were just restocked!)
The best coffee!
There are a few awesome brands I want to share if you’re looking for great coffee! (Thanks to many of you for sharing them with me!)
First up, is Chicago French Press, which is a Black, Woman-owned Chicago-based coffee company that makes MANY deliciously flavored coffees! I am obsessed with all things Coconut so obviously added the Coconut Cream flavor to cart ASAP!
Second, is Mamaleelu cold brew! I ordered a batch of their coffee yesterday–another Midwestern brand, they are headquartered in Michigan!
Third is Counter Coffee Air Roasters, located in Forest Park! They are an awesome local coffee shop that ships to all fifty states! They have a Black Lives Matter blend where 25% of the proceeds are donated to Black Lives Matter Foundation. Also, they roast it on demand!
Fourth is BLK & Bold! I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about them as well–they make fair trade coffees and teas, and are also now available at Target– so if you prefer to shop in store, check for them there!
Design Dua Baby Basket
If you’re looking for a one of a kind baby gift, these baby baskets are STUNNING. 😍 And also very practical–you can move them from room to room wherever you are! (They are sleep safe, don’t worry!)
Tana Ethiopian Towel
These stunning towels are handmade in Ethiopia using an interlocking warp and weft technique, which gives it special durability. With special care and skill, artisans choose the cotton that they will hand spin, wash, dye, and weave, finishing every towel flawlessly. This would make the best gift! (But like, also to yourself?)
WOW these linen linens 😍 (is that a thing? Linen linens?) This makes me wish we had a giant linen closet. Or any linen closet. Whether you need new bed linens or towels, table linens, napkins–whatever–everything they make is stunning!
Elisamama Kids Clothes:
LOOK AT EMMA! How is she 16!? 😭 Kelly turned me onto this wonderful brand when she posted Emma in a darling Elisamama dress on IG today! All of her joyful kids clothes are handmade in Nigeria, with the goal to economically empower local artisans through job skills and training! She also recently launched “Elisamama Feeding a Family,” which is a $20 option you can add to your cart with your order to provide Nigerians with relief from the pandemic. (Where more than half the population lives in extreme poverty.) $20 can feed a family of five for a whole week! This made me wish I had little girls just so I could dress them in these dresses!
Galerie.LA linen maxi
GALERIE.LA was founded with the mission to bring socially conscious fashion to the masses. They are an LA based, (but also online!) female-founded boutique that carries beautiful sustainable clothing at very reasonable prices (as far as sustainable fashion goes!) I love this flowy, breezy maxi that will be a go-to for everything from WFH, quarantine lounging, to a socially distanced picnic.
Pearnova nail polish in the perfect summer red
A Chicago based brand (🙌🏻) that makes non-toxic nail polish in the dreamiest colors! I pretty much exclusively wear red or neutral nail polish, so I get a LOT of questions on “the perfect red” and this shade called “Kissu Miss You” is the perfect red for summer. Punchy with orange undertones, it’s basically like encapsulating a tropical cocktail on a patio in a nail polish. 💁🏻
