I’d probably consider myself a makeup and beauty minimalist. I don’t have a lot of time, and my skin is pretty sensitive, so I wouldn’t say I like to use a lot of products. However, there a few new products I’ve been trying out recently. Some, I’m already hooked on, but others take a bit longer to see results (AKA, the jury’s still out on their effectiveness). Here are some recent additions to my routine, and my thoughts on them thus far:
1. BAREMINERALS COMPLEXION RESCUE
I’m convinced that 99.9% of foundations make me break out. I was using Tarte Amazonian Clay for years (aka the end all be all for natural product junkies) and then realized about 6 months ago it was making my skin worse.
The gals at Sephora (aka my BFF’s) told me to switch to bareMinerals bareSkin serum foundation, and I was hooked. Then, finding out I was already a convert, they sent me their newest product to try out, Complexion Rescue, and I am O-B-S-E-S-S-E-D. It’s a BB, CC, and tinted moisturizer all in one (which I was not remotely convinced that I needed until I tried this stuff.)
It’s a hefty claim that it noticeably hydrates your skin in just 5 days, but it’s true. My skin is always super dry, especially in the winter, and it has really helped. I put it on with a foundation brush and do some extra buffing in areas where I need it most. Then I use the bareSkin on top to combat any redness, or where I still need additional coverage. (Those two alone are enough, I don’t usually need concealer on top). I love it because it leaves this beautiful dewy finish, and never leaves those gross dry spots that you can get when you mix dry skin with other foundations.
2. COD LIVER OIL
When you’re having issues with your skin, you google EVERYTHING imaginable to trying and figure out a solution to your terrible break outs. That’s when I stumbled accross cod liver oil. Seriously, look at this google search, “cod liver oil and acne”.
Long story short, there are several ways Cod Liver oil helps clear up skin, but the two main ones are a significant source of Vitamin A (found in retinoids) and Vitamin D (which also regulates skin).
I JUST ordered cod liver capsules off of Drugstore.com, but then I read the dosage and you have to swallow FIVE of them per day (they are not tiny pills, let me tell you) in order to just get a teaspoon (equal to one dose). So I think I might suck it up and buy the actual oil itself. I’ve heard (and read) that the lemon flavor isn’t bad at all. Kind of tastes like you’re swallowing a tiny spoon of lemony canola oil. I don’t know which is worse, but I certainly think that’s worth clear skin, right?
3. GLOSSIER MOISTURIZING MOON MASK
You remember me raving about Glossier products here. Well, they’ve come out with a couple new products and I am once again, completely charmed. The Moon Mask is ultra cooling and feels luxurious when you put it on, almost like a really heavy cream. Keep it on for 20 minutes, rinse, and your face will feel literally softer than a baby’s skin. Didn’t know that kind of thing happened? Me either. I’ve yet to try the Mega Greens mask, but I’ll keep you posted on that, too.
4. ILLUMASK LIGHT THERAPY MASK
Yep, perhaps the creepiest of this bunch. Definitely the creepiest–Illumask is a light therapy/storm trooper mask that you put on your face for 15 minutes per day, and comes with 30 uses. I’ve only used it 5 times but I’m starting to see a difference (as well as a backlash if I forget or skip a day). Kind of the effect that you get when you lay out in the summer, when the extra sun helps to clear your skin. (Minus the horrible sun damage part.)
Additional side effects: this will REALLY weird out your boyfriend, AND he’ll take embarrassing photos of you to send to all of your friends. Other than that, I think it’s worth the $30. I’ll update you in a month and let you know what I think then.
5. FAVE 4 TEXTURE TAKEOVER
Stop whatever you’re doing right now and go order Fave4 Texture Takeover spray. Hands down the best hair spray I’ve ever used, and I will use it every day for the rest of my life.
Wow, that’s a really intense claim, Keys.
I’m not playin’. This spray is like a dry shampoo and hair spray in one. Has great flexible hold, smells like heaven, and literally makes your hair style last for days. DAYS. I cannot achieve my favorite loose curls/bedhead hair look without it. Serious game-changer.
