my roommates and I love entertaining in our new apartment. the problem is, we don’t have a ton of time on our hands, especially during the week. over the past few months, we’ve acquired a few sneaky tricks to make us look like regular old Martha’s (with day jobs). stock up on some of these items (many you probably have already!) and you can pull something together in less than 20!
okay so never mind the TJ’s 2 buck chuck corks…because they make such cute place settings! you can also use these to hold signs for appetizers or beverages too if you’re setting up a food or drink table. out of picture frames? these can hold photos, menu’s or signs too! also, take a little extra time to slice the corks (exhibit “Melissa’s” nametag above) so you don’t end up with a lopsided guy
one of my favorite tricks is to swap the pictures out of their existing frames and replace them with a cute sign or paper. you don’t have to be a photoshop whiz either, a handwritten menu or sign also works great!
There are usually about three types of cheese and some form of italian meat in my fridge at all times, so cheeseboards are one of my favorite kitchen items- they a lot of use! a cheese plate is one of the lowest maintenance appetizers you can throw together, not to mention it looks extra classy.
big wonders come in small packages. you can pick up washi tape at any craft store (or my favorite, paper source). you can make anything with this stuff- if you want more inspiration, check out this sweet buzzfeed article on how to make 50 different things with washi tape
you know what raffia is. it’s kindof like ribbony, papery and twiney? well, you can buy a lot of it for pretty cheap, meaning you’ll never run out of it. it’s fairly subtle, so you can use it in a lot of different scenarios. I like to tie it around wine bottles, string banners and tie napkins around silverware
Not having a sit-down dinner? got fancy chargers? use them for serving trays for appetizers (they work great for serving bruschetta), cupcakes, or a birthday cake
these little straws add a lot of personality to your beverages. you can buy them in pretty much any color, and they look even cuter with some washi tape drink flags on top! not sure how to decorate your cupcakes? cut some up and put them on top! see one of my favorite tutorials here
if you take nothing away from this post other than this, I will be happy. seriously. this. is. genius. we have a bar in our kitchen that I use to serve all our food and drinks on and we keep about 5 rolls of wrapping paper on hand that serve as a temporary table (er…bar) runner. it looks like you were planning your party for days. I also use the same paper as a temporary runner at the kitchen table and coffee table to bring everything together- voila! regular old Martha, I told you!
