When we booked our trip to Paris months back, (it’s coming up SO SOON! Less than 3 weeks!) I started having visions of Neal and I strolling through the city with no particular plan in mind, picnicking on the Seine, eating baguettes, and me wearing some incredibly french-inspired outfits of breezy button white downs, stripes, scarves, bare-faced with red lipstick. Needless to say, I’m a little french-style obsessed. Here are 5 outfit hacks I’m wholeheartedly embracing during our 9 day trip to France!
1. Don’t do you your hair
French women are known for appearing “perfectly undone” because, well, they are! They don’t spend hours in the mirror doing their hair–they typically opt for au natural over a done-up ‘do. This has always been my philosophy as well–I love the look of tousled hair, which works out perfectly, because lugging a blow-drier to another country and risking a power outage fiasco does not sound like my idea of a good time. Let it down and let it air dry, or pull it back into a messy chignon–add a few pins, and you’re ready to go!
I try to let my hair air dry as often as possible, and picked up a travel sized version of Bumble and Bumble’s “Don’t Blow It” air dry cream last time I got my hair cut (If you’re looking for a hair salon in Chicago–Sine Qua Non is A-MAZING!) and I’ve been loving it lately! I will definitely be stashing it in my carry-on!
2. Save time in the morning–just add lipstick!
In the same vein, you don’t see a lot of French girls with tons of caked on makeup, false eyelashes, and the whole shebang. A bit of foundation and some mascara are the main stays of her makeup bag–and a swipe of lipstick is enough to dress up any outfit! My two go-to red shades are M.A.C. Lady Danger and NARS Cruella! If you want a drugstore buy, I recently bought Milani’s Sweet Nectar shade–it’s an orangey-coral hue that is really great for summer!
3. Upgrade your bras
I recently read this post on Cup of Jo and was totally inspired. She talks about how french women view their lacy bra’s as part of their outfit–a loose, white button down with a bit of black lace peeking out. I love it! Journelle has the prettiest ever lingerie, so I plan to stock up on a few pretty lacy numbers like these before we leave!
4. Add a scarf
You know me–adding scarves to everything. I don’t know when I really started wearing them, but I’ve always loved the parisian-inspired look a dainty silk scarf (like this one!) creates with literally anything you pair them with! I think scarves are such a simple, but perfectly classic way to add a little punch to your outfit, and I’ve acquired quite the collection. (Oh, bandanas, too!)
5. Choose Comfort
French women are known for going the comfy route–jeans, flowing dresses, or donning the best ever ballet flats. I was never a huge fan of ballet flats before, but they’re really growing on me–especially the lace-up kind that are really big right now! I’m also lusting after the scalloped Chloe ballet flats, but actually found that Sam Edelman has a budget-friendly dupe! (Seriously, they look EXACTLY the same!) This classic pink pair is also perfection. I’m really considering springing for a pair of these before we head to Paris!
