As you guys probably know based on my incessant Instagram story babbling, I’ve been challenging myself to stretch further in between washing my hair. Depending on the week, I can go about four days now!
This is mostly just for fun, because–I mean, who wants to wash their hair more than they have to? 😂 But in general–the less processing you do to your hair–the better! If you wash it less, that means less blow drying, less hot tooling, and the like. If you have unruly hair, this can save you HOURS per week!
Plus, after awhile, your hair actually gets used to your new schedule, and it will become a lot less greasy over time! (This is where nerdy science experiment Jess comes out, hehe.)
In all seriousness, this is totally a personal preference. I do think cutting down on washes has major benefits for your hair health-wise, but I don’t hold myself to a crazy rigorous schedule. If I can’t make it look good, I wash it. Do what works best for you!
If you’re, like me, have been wanting to extend further and further in between shampoos, these are the products that have helped me do it! I feel like I’ve really gotten it down to a science, so I’m excited to share the beauty buys that have made this allll possible 😉
#1. A great dry shampoo (or a few…?)
The best dry shampoos:
First thing’s first–you need to get a good dry shampoo that works for you! To be totally honest, this is a completely personal opinion. What works for one person doesn’t work for another, so I’d recommend buying your products somewhere like Nordstrom–because they have an amazing return policy and if you aren’t satisfied with a product, they’re happy to exchange or return it for you! They also have a really big selection to choose from, especially within their SPACE.NK.Apothecary section!
I have tried a LOT of dry shampoos (both drugstore and high-end), and my favorite one really depends on the day, but my top three are Living Proof, R & Co’s Death Valley, and Bumble and Bumble’s Pret a Powder. I don’t know about you–but I go through phases with products where I’ll just gravitate toward one in particular, or one seems to do a better job on a given day–but these three are always in heavy rotation!
There are many reasons I love these particular formulas:
All three do a great job of soaking up excess oil, adding a lot of texture (which is perfect for that messy bedhead look) and smell amazing. Living Proof’s does the best job of really “cleaning” my hair and making it smell clean (it’s patented formula works different than other dry shampoos!).
Death Valley is the lightest feeling in your hair (if you don’t like “feeling” like you have dry shampoo in your hair–it adds really amazing texture which is great for a “touch of bedhead” look) and I will say that Bumble & Bumble’s is the best volumizer and gives the best hold and most intense texture–which makes it really awesome if you’re wanting to put your hair up (it holds really well) and gives my roots a lot of “oomph”–even if my hair is clean, I add this to the roots to give it volume!
Also, new dry shampoo PASTE:
R&Co JUST came out with this dry shampoo paste! I got my hair cut yesterday and my hairstylist, Stacia was telling me about it (I’ve been going to her at Sine Qua Non for years, FYI! Can’t say enough good things!) It goes on as a paste, which you massage into your hair, and then it magically turns into a powder that soaks up oil and gives insane texture. I’m DYING to try it. I’ll report back! (Could be really great for travel to avoid accidental sprayage/spillage?)
A note on spray dry shampoos vs powders:
a little secret one of my friends, Madison (who is a freelance hair and makeup stylist) let me in on–for some ladies with fine hair, the propellants in spray dry shampoos may make hair greasy and counteract the powder. If this happens to you, definitely try the powder form rather than the spray! She turned me onto Bumble & Bumble’s and I’ve been hooked ever since!
When to apply dry shampoo?
The best time to apply dry shampoo is before bed! Spray or sprinkle a liberal amount on roots (this goes for all over the top and sides of your head, not just your part line) and without rubbing it in, secure it in a braid or loose bun, and go to bed. You’ll wake up with roots that look fresh and the perfect bed-head texture! Re-apply throughout the day as needed.
Before a workout:
One of the biggest questions I get is “how do you not wash your hair after a workout?” and there are a few answers I have to that question:
1. Take this with a grain of salt, because I don’t sweat very much to begin with. It’s strange, I know, but I wouldn’t feel right having you think I sweat all the way to my ponytail every day and come home and fix it with some dry shampoo. 😂 For some, this trick may just work for lighter workouts like yoga or pilates, but I can get my hair through a couple high intensity workouts with the method below. 2. I apply dry shampoo before and after my workout. The before is really the key! Also, this is again, a personal preference, but in a pinch, you can take a blow dryer to your roots really quick (I advocate avoiding blow-dryers as much as possible to minimize damage, but a minute or two with a blow dryer on your roots isn’t going to hurt much!) and follow with more dry shampoo. You should be good to go! I use this T3 blow-dryer and I love how small it is, and that it has several heat settings so you can minimize damage as much as possible!
#2: A clarifying shampoo or scrub
If you’re washing your hair less, that means you’re using a LOT more dry shampoo–and dealing with more buildup in general. I like to use a clarifying shampoo about once a week depending on how often I’ve been washing. Christophe Robin, a French brand I’m obsessed with, makes two really amazing products for it! (I couldn’t photograph the other one because I used it up and I need to get more 😂) Both are clean and free of parabens, phthalates, and petrochemicals.
This is definitely the more intensive (and more expensive) of the two, but it’s an amazing product–I think it’s great if you are really looking for a deep clean and need some scrub action on your scalp (i.e. post beach vacay, it would be great too). It does a great job of removing buildup, re-balancing the scalp, soothing and moisturizing all at the same time. It’s also designed for use as a post-coloring treatment to relieve itchiness and remove chemical residues left on the scalp, so if you color your hair, this is a great to have!
A word to the wise: a little bit goes a LONG WAY. I rub a dollop in my hands and get it wet and fully emulsified first, and I’ll mix it with a bit of shampoo to make it spread more evenly on the scalp. Don’t get it on your ends–shampoo it on the roots only. (It will make your hair feel straw-like–don’t panic. Just trust me!)
This is a much gentler (more everyday) purifying shampoo. This isn’t my everyday shampoo but I think it could be gentle enough to be! If you are someone with an especially sensitive scalp, this would be an awesome regular shampoo for you. I use it more as a once per week or as-needed basis–typically more in the summer than in the winter! I really love it and it does a great job of removing any buildup and excess oil.
#3: No-crease hair ties + sleep scrunchies
If you have issues with your hair creasing–these products will CHANGE YO LIFE! They’ve really helped me extend my hairstyles by avoiding kinky or creased hair post-sleep or post-workout.
I was always skeptical of the hype of these. Plus, to me, they look like weird cable wires that remind me of dial-up internet 😂 however, PAY NO MIND to that, because after you make it through a workout with one of these and take your hair down to find ZERO kinks–you’ll be a believer. They’re also ideal for holding your hair up in your shower cap without creasing it.
Tip: get the clear color or a color that matches your hair. I got the pink ones thinking they’d be cute but they just look weird and messy!
I had never even considered sleeping with my hair in a scrunchie until a bunch of you guys DMed me and said they’ve changed your lives! These satin scrunchies don’t pull on your hair, and by keeping your hair/hair products/oil off your face, it reduces breakouts as well! I own the Slip satin pillowcase (which I love), and these are made by the same brand.
For soft waves, put your dry hair (post dry-shampoo application) in a braid before bed, and secure with a scrunchie (the invisibobbles work well here too!) wake up, remove, and go! This is similar to my air-drying method to get the best beachwaves–but with dry hair–see that tutorial here!
To preserve your existing hairstyle (i.e. if you don’t want waves–or, if you’re like me, sometimes just too lazy to put your hair in a braid 😂) twist your hair into a topknot or ponytail and secure with a scrunchie. This is where the scrunchies come in most handy, because a night with the invisibobbles in my hair will pull and tangle, but the scrunchies never hurt or tangle because of their satin quality!
