IT’S HERE, IT’S HERE!
It’s a BEAUTIFUL day here in Chicago–the sun is shining and reflecting brightly on the freshly fallen snow–and outside it feels like HOPE.
There were moments I never thought this day would get here. It couldn’t have come fast enough. It feels SO good to feel hopeful after so much hopelessness.
If this were any other year, many of us would be throwing grand, Superbowl-sized parties to celebrate the inauguration today. (Because…is there any other event more worthy of a GIANT celebration!?) And who knows, maybe we will still throw belated inauguration BBQ’s this summer? (That would be a fun birthday party theme…)
But the reality is, we are not throwing parties, because we are at home. On the couch. Again. 😂 Per always. And “celebrating” the traditional way at home kind of feels like…work?
But that’s where this blog post comes in. How do you celebrate today when you don’t actually feel like putting forth much effort, but you still want to celebrate? Like I’ve said 100 times over the past year–it’s the little things! Ya know?
The answer is…you make root beer floats. With booze, maybe. Or not. Either way, RBFs ALWAYS = celebration!!
Inauguration/Celebratory Root Beer Floats: A Celebration in a Glass
I will admit I had this idea last night so I got up early to make these to snap some photos this morning. So if you’re wondering, yes, I’ve already had an RBF for breakfast, and I may just have one for lunch, too. WHAT A RUSH.
But why RBF’s? (Aside from the fact that they’re just actually the best?)
You may or may not know this, but our guy Joe actually doesn’t drink! However, we know he LOVES ice cream, so what else could be a better tribute?
If you can, I recommend investing in some high-quality root beer, like Sprecher (SO GOOD). Or, if root beer isn’t your jam, have you ever had a classic Coke float? Also delicious–my favorite is Mexican Coke! Mix with your favorite ice cream (I love Graeter’s vanilla bean, but Joe’s favorite is Jenni’s!) and you’ve got the easiest treat that feels nostalgic and so, so special.
Not to mention, it’s a celebration that doesn’t involve a zoom, or putting on a bra, and that, my friends, is a win in this day and age.
But make it boozy:
Want to kick it up a notch? You didn’t think we’d leave you hanging, did you? 😉 If you want to spike your float, simply add any of the following that you might have on hand! (FYI, if you’re making yours in a rocks glass like me, don’t add a full shot–that would make it QUITE strong. 😂 But then again, you deserve it, so carry on.)
- Dark rum
- Vanilla flavored vodka
- Regular vodka
- Use alcoholic root beer! (Available at most big liquor stores!)
But Jess, I prefer a more traditional breakfast drink to kick off my Inauguration day:
Yes, I feel you. I will suggest this–have you ever made an affogato? It’s espresso poured over a scoop of ice cream. So basically, it’s a coffee float. A FANTASTIC idea! You could even throw a shot of Kahlua or Bailey’s in it. Because…it is a celebration, after all, right? 😉
Other easy zero-effort required ways to celebrate today:
Wear your favorite gear
Your best Biden Harris gear, of COURSE! I will be wearing my Mt. Nasty t-shirt and my Biden Harris sweatshirt over the top! (And probably these tie-dye sweats on the bottom because they are so fun and happy and basically a celebration all by themselves!)
Eat a sandwich
Again, maybe in other years I would’ve gotten creative with some patriotic-themed appetizers, but know what sounded WAY more appealing to me? Ordering a sandwich. 😂 Yeah. Doesn’t that sound more fun? Who wants to celebrate Joe and Kamala by doing the dishes anyway?
After some google stalking, I found out that Joe’s favorite sandwich shop is Capriotti’s, which is a Delaware-based shop but they now have locations everywhere, including Chicago! I’ve never had it before so I’m REALLY excited for an excuse to order it! He apparently loves their thanksgiving-style sandwich but is also known to go for their Italian sub, which is really more my style. If you don’t have a Capriotti’s, I feel like Joe will still really appreciate you ordering any sandwich from a local sub shop in his honor!
Another great option is to channel your inner Kamala and whip up a classic tuna melt. (Have you seen this video? It’s HILARIOUS. Her response to Senator Mark Warner’s appalling and hysterical “tuna melt” tutorial.)
Listen to a great playlist
My personal favorite is this “YA FIRED” playlist that I found on Spotify during the election. I know the Biden/Harris campaign has its own official playlist, but I think this one definitely has a little more pep. 😉 (I mean, it has JoJo on it, so you know it’s good.)
Wear your pearls
Women around the country are donning pearls today as a tribute to our first female Vice President, a way to celebrate this monumental moment together and apart! Give this article in the New York Times a read–you won’t regret it! ❤️
