Denim shirt: J.Crew–available at Nordstrom as well as J.Crew. If you’re looking for one that’s a little bit more oversized or longer, I love this relaxed boyfriend/long chambray shirt. I also love this Abercrombie version and this version that ties in the front–so cute! Jeans: Levi’s Wedgie Straight Jeans–they come in SO many different colors and washes and are available a bunch of places–Nordstrom and Shopbop have a great selection. Navy slides: J.Crew Factory (on sale for $83! Also come in pink and black!) I also love these twist block-heeled mules if you prefer an open toe for spring! Neck scarf: J.Crew (sold out) but similar here and love this cute pink one, too! Bag: Madewell Transport Tote (my favorite tote ever. Fits so much stuff and also comes in so many pretty colors!) Beret: Urban Outfitters (they have the best berets–I’ve also bought ones off of Amazon that were too big and floppy and looked awful ? save yourself the hassle and just buy this one!!) Sunnies: Ray Ban Lipstick: RMS beauty’s “RMS red” Hair & Makeup: See my everyday makeup tutorial here and my everyday hair tutorial here!
I’m Louisville bound today, guys!
(SF —> Kentucky Derby! Boy am I gunna be TIRED on Sunday or what? ?)
As I’m writing this, I realize I actually just wore this exact outfit in San Francisco, just paired with my trusty white sneaks. I told you–serial outfit repeater, I am! Side note, I recently added a new addition to my already denim-heavy wardrobe–this J.Crew jean jacket. Now we’ve got a real Canadian Tuxedo infestation over here. (Can you tell that denim is a fashion trend I am 110% behind? Does denim even count as a trend? I don’t think so ? when has denim ever NOT been in style?)
Anyway, if you’re a denim lover like me, I hope you’re excited for today’s post–we’re talking all about how to style one of my favorite staples–the Chambray shirt!
(Side note–we shot this in the Waldorf Astoria Courtyard in the VERY spot that Neal proposed. Awwwww. All the feels. See those photos and read how he popped the question in this post!)
Chambray and Denim: How to Make it Work
I have always been a huge fan of denim on denim. I know sometimes it can be a daunting thing to try out, but it’s easier to pull off than you might think! My only tip would be to avoid pairing dark denim with dark denim–you may start to feel like Mario or Luigi then–but otherwise, you should be good ? (Remember that joke? DENIM DENIM DENIM.)
Another tip–mix in some feminine elements with your denim on denim outfit, because without something to juxtapose your Canadian Tuxedo, you may start to feel a little bit costumey–(or not, of course, this is totally based on your personal style and preference!)
For example, here I’ve mixed in some more girly pieces–the blush beret and navy mules–along with some classic elements–the neck scarf and red lip. These little tricks transform what would’ve felt like a very “tomboyish” outfit into a polished one that is polished while still being casual and on-trend.
Other approachable denim outfit ideas:
Denim shirt or jacket with white jeans:
If the Canadian Tuxedo thing is too much for you, wearing your denim shirt or jacket (this is the one I’m wearing above and I love it so much!!) with white jeans (mine are the kick-crop jeans from Everlane! They stretch out quite a bit so if you’re in between, go with the smaller size!) is a much easier way to ease into the denim on denim trend! The espadrille platforms also add–(see? this trick again!) a more feminine element to keep the outfit fresh and springy along with my silk peplum tank! (How cute would this summer outfit be with a white denim skirt, too! This one is so cute and only $49!)
Denim shirt as a jacket (or tied around your waist!):
Don’t feel like throwing on a jean jacket? A denim shirt is a really cute alternative (especially if the weather is too heavy for a jean jacket, but there’s still a slight chill in the air!) Tying one around your waist is also a really cute way to tone down a feminine dress like the one above and make it feel less girly. (Side note, these shoes–Everlane’s “Day Heels”– are probably my favorite year-round staples in my wardrobe! Come in tons of colors and are SO comfortable! You can walk in them for miles! If you’re in between sizes go with the larger size!) This is another one of my favorite spring/ summer outfits!
Long denim shirt and leggings:
One of the comfiest outfits in the world? Pairing your chambray shirt with leggings! I do this a lot when I travel–if you don’t like your bum to be uncovered while in leggings (ah, the old “leggings aren’t real pants” debacle!)–opt for a long denim shirt, boyfriend style. This look is especially cute paired with Allbirds or my favorite Jack Purcell white sneakers and a cute bandana or neck scarf! P.S. These are the leggings you guys are always raving about! I need to try them!
Denim shirt with black skinny jeans or dark skinny jeans:
Again, if the whole monochromatic denim thing isn’t working for you, try contrasting colors instead. Go for a skinny jean in either black (an easy way to dress up your denim shirt!) or dark blue paired with a light blue denim shirt and you’ll feel less “chic auto mechanic.” (The jeans I’m wearing above are VERY old from Madewell, but this Abercrombie pair is really similar–and I’m obsessed with their jeans! They are so similar to Madewell’s!) This looks especially cute with a lighter colored jacket–like a white linen blazer like mine above (to make it more professional or polished) or a light colored suede jacket!
What are your favorite ways to wear denim? Hope you have a great Thursday!
