We’re back from Dallas and this morning is NEAL’S BIRTHDAY! His 30th to be exact!
I’ve got something up my sleeve for this weekend, but I’m not posting it here in case he reads this post before I can wake up and unveil the surprise ? You’ll have to follow along on Instagram stories to get the update and see how we’ll be celebrating! I am SO excited for this weekend!
In other news, today I’m sharing another staple, styled multiple ways! This time, it’s the sweater dress! Ba da daaaa!
Let’s “hop to it” as my mom would say, yes? (That means, “let’s go!”)
Sweater Dress Styles + What to Wear With Them:
Choosing a great sweater dress:
I love a good sweater dress–it’s a really versatile piece that transitions multiple seasons–from fall to winter, and winter to spring. They come in ton’s of different styles and lengths–from a classic shift, fit and flare, to more trendy styles incorporating elements from bell sleeves to ruffles! You can find ’em in crewneck, turtleneck, mock neck, v-neck, chunky knit, rib knit–the list goes on!
Today, I’ve chosen a classic long-sleeved crewneck dress to style because I think it’s probably the most versatile in terms of how many ways you can style it. Sadly, the exact dress I’m wearing here sold out before I could post this (gah! ?) but you can replicate all of these looks with any dress of similar cut. I’m linking some other cute favorites below!

What to wear with a sweater dress:
I’ll get more into this in a second, but there are so many things you can wear with a sweater dress. My biggest tip is to remember that you can layer under as well as over–so many times, we only think of layering over–jackets, blazers, etc–but sometimes layering something like a button-down under your dress is the easiest way to switch up your look. The other great thing is that you can make virtually any shoes work with a sweater dress–which brings me to my next point…
Shoes to wear with a sweater dress:
Sweater dresses are so versatile, they look cute with any type of shoe. Here, I chose to style them with ankle boots, over the knee boots, and pumps–but they would also look so cute with a great loafer (I love my Gucci loafers, but Sam Edelmans are an amazing dupe–I have them in leopard but they come in black!) ballet flats (like these!) knee high boots (I own these Splendid boots, which I love styling with sweater dresses and they’re currently 40% off!) and sneakers (go for a classic, crisp white sneaker–I love my Jack Purcells!)

How to Wear a Sweater Dress 3 Ways:
#1: With classic pumps for a polished look
One of my favorite things about sweater dresses is that they often look so cute all by themselves–I love a good sweater dress paired with a classic pump! So often we feel like we have to re-invent the wheel when it comes to getting dressed. It’s nice to remember that sometimes, simple is best.
#2: With over the knee boots:
Dress: Sold out, similar here, here and here! Boots: Steve Madden Gabbie Boots–Chinese Laundry also makes a similar budget-friendly pair with a heel! Vince Camuto also has a similar pair on sale! Lipstick: RMS Beauty in RMS Red Scarf: White + Warren (on sale!) (shop more White + Warren on Shopbop!)
You guys know how much I love a good neck scarf (haha, exhibit A above and exhibit B below ?) I especially love this cashmere one because it adds the warmth of a chunky cashmere scarf with the femininity of a sweet neck scarf! I like the two-toned look it adds along with the boots in a similar color! These Steve Madden faux suede boots are so affordable and comfortable, too! I think the “in between heel” that isn’t too low or too high makes them really versatile for day or night, too!
#3: With ankle boots and tights:
Dress: Sold out, similar here, here and here! Tights: From Walgreens haha but if you want nicer ones I’ve heard these from Nordstrom are great! Booties: Sarto Scarf: J.Crew (mine is a Paris print but they still have the London print which is almost identical and on sale for $7!!)
I received the same request from quite a few of you in that you weren’t sure how to wear tights with a more casual outfit, so I wanted to throw in a pair of tights into the mix to show you how I would style them to say, dinner and a movie, or even in a more casual work environment! Pairing black tights with booties of the same color goes a long way to elongate the legs and keep you warm all at the same time! I love these booties by SARTO and they’ve been a staple of mine all fall and winter! (They come in tan as well, if that’s more your style!)
