J.Crew Cocoon Coat
I’ve been getting SO many questions on my favorite wool coat–the J.Crew cocoon coat, so I thought I’d dedicate today’s post to diving into an in-depth review. (Plus, you know, I’ll spill the details on everything else I’m wearing too!)
I owe my love of the J.Crew Cocoon coat (and many other things) to Kelly. I borrowed her grey cocoon coat many many years ago and was SHOCKED at how warm it was. Before then, I thought all non puffer coats were just for looks and not for warmth–luckily, this one is actually for both!
We shot these photos in Lincoln Park last week, and I got to hang and play with Emma a little bit afterwords before heading to Eataly to check out their latest restaurant, BAITA, and take a Gnocchi cooking class! They are one of my FAVORITE partners to work with! (Also, make sure you enter my instagram giveaway–I’m giving away two tickets to their Gnocchi making class!)
Emma is getting SO big. She has such a big personality and she refers to me as “Uncle Jess” ? which is my favorite thing ever. She had just woken up from her nap and gave me the biggest hug. My heart!
Anyway, okay, the coat. That’s what we’re talking about today. (Did I mention that Emma has her own Cocoon coat?!)
So–let’s jump in with some facts and FAQ’s
Why this J.Crew Cocoon Coat rocks:
- It’s actually warm. It’s made of J.Crew’s special “stadium cloth” fabric which is very efficient at blocking the wind, keeping the cold out and locking warmth in. I think a lot of this also has to do with the coats design, which is, quite literally, a cocoon! Seriously, it’s the warmest wool coat you will buy. Their Lady Day coat is also very warm, but I think this one is by far the warmest!
- It’s actually CUTE. It comes in lot’s of colors and it’s one of the only coats that will keep you looking good and warm at the same time.
What size should you order?
The J.Crew Cocoon coat does run big–I would suggest sizing down. I’m usually a 0 or 2 in coats and I ordered a size 0 and I still have room to layer underneath it.
Will it replace your puffer coat?
You’re funny ? No, sadly, it will not. You will not wear this coat when there is snow on the ground in February and you need to walk to work. HOWEVER, it’s definitely warm enough to wear in probabblyyy 30 degrees and above–and you’ll always wear it out at night all winter long (as long as you’re not walking–it’s a great coat when you want to look nice, warm, and you’re pretty much going from your door into an Uber).
Does it pill?
Pilling is caused by friction and rubbing of material–which is why you’ll often find that coats pill under arms (because you swing your arms when you walk). I have not personally had problem with pilling but I have heard from others who have. Honestly, this is something that happens with most coats–just buy a de-piller and you’re fine! (You can also use an old razor, but I don’t think it works as well!)
How I styled it here:
Tissue Turtleneck: Duh. When am I not wearing one of these? They are the BEST. They are super thin (like a very thin t-shirt!) and I love that they’re form-fitting (not chunky) turtlenecks. My favorites are the striped versions ?? I own them in both Small and XS–the one I’m wearing here is XS. I would say it runs true to size, I always order either XS or Small depending on how I want it to fit. if you want it snug like this, go with the smaller size. If you want it a bit looser, go with the larger size!
Black skinny jeans: These jeans are from American Eagle ?? You first saw me style them in my Fall Weekend Capsule Wardrobe–if you don’t want to spend a lot but want some super soft, stretchy skinny jeans–these are AMAZING. They run small though, so size up from your normal size!
Everlane Day Boots: O-M-G-you guys. These freaking boots. You know how much I love Everlane’s Day Heels–well, these are the boot version, and they are TO DIE for. They are so, so soft–made of super soft buttery leather, and so comfortable–yes, they have heels, but I can seriously wear them all day and they won’t hurt!
Beret: You KNOW my love of berets! I snagged this cute red one from Nordstrom–it’s so affordable and couldn’t be cuter!
