Do you ever feel FOMO when you think about makeup or beauty products?
As in–there are SO many out there, how do you know if you’re missing out on something REALLY awesome? What if you’re actually using crappy beauty products when you think they’re the best out there? You always want ALL. THE. OPTIONS.
While I have to admit, I’m certainly not a total product junkie by most definitions, like most women, I have gone through quite a lot of trial and error when it comes to beauty over the past several years.
A big life lesson (and good news for both of us!) that I’ve learned, is that more money doesn’t necessarily mean better products! I tend to use a mixture of highs and lows when it comes to everyday makeup. I might be a VIB member at Sephora, but the same goes for Walgreens beauty counter, too!
So today, for those who are curious, I’m sharing my everyday makeup routine, and the products that I reach for each morning. (Well, you know, the select mornings where I actually manage to swipe some makeup on my face.)
Step 1: Apply a base
This is a step that so many people skip over, yet I think it is the MOST important in achieving a dewy, flawless foundation application. I can see a very noticeable difference in my skin (especially after a few hours into the day) if I don’t use a base, such as a primer or BB/CC cream.
If you have problems with your foundation peeling or flaking off in dry patches, applying a base will help immensely in this department.
I often switch back and forth between Smashbox’s iconic primer and BareMinerals Complexion Rescue as my base. The Complexion Rescue is really great for when my skin is dry, it really helps improve it in the moisture department. I also like that it gives me more coverage than just a primer alone, so if I’m having a good skin day, it sometimes allows me to skip my normal foundation all together. I also love Glossier’s Priming Moisturizer as well–which allows you to skip a few steps when you’re on the go, and I love the way it makes my skin feel.

Step 2: Apply Foundation + Concealer
After applying my primer, I follow up with foundation. I’ve found quite a few that I really love–the kinds I’m bouncing back and forth between at the moment are my old standby–BareMinerals Serum Foundation, and Clinique’s Foundation Chubby Stick. (I did a tutorial with them over here.) I love that Clinique’s version is super portable, so it’s my go-to to have in my makeup bag when I’m out and about. The two are both pretty full coverage, but they feel really different on your skin–it’s all about your preference (or for me, how I’m feeling that day!)
Then, I’ll apply NARS concealer under my eyes. Depending on the day, sometimes I skip this step if I’m short on time.

Step 3: Follow with powder
If I’m applying a powder bronzer and blush, I do a quick dust of translucent powder to set my foundation provide a smooth canvas for bronzer and blush–this way it goes on smooth and flawless. If you don’t do this beforehand, you’ll end up with splotches. (Any translucent powder will do, in my experience, there really isn’t much of a difference between high end brands and drugstore brands–I use Essence’s version and it’s only a few bucks, but I’ve also really liked BareMinerals version as well!)
Note: if you’re applying a cream bronzer and blush, you’ll want to make sure to apply it before setting your makeup with powder. Think of it this way–apply all your “wet” elements, and only when you’re all finished with the wet elements should you set with powder.
Step 4: Add blush and bronzer
In terms of powder blushes/bronzers: I like both NARS and ELF’s two in one bronzer/blush combo pallet! I do a light sweep of bronzer right below cheekbones, on the sides of my nose and on the outsides of my forehead, followed by blush on my cheeks.
If you’re into more cream-based bronzers and blushes, I really love Clinique’s chubby versions–and again, they’re so easy to just stow away in your makeup bag on the go!

Step 5: Apply eyeliner + brow pencil
For everyday, I keep my eyeliner pretty minimal, so I love using Clinique’s Skinny Sticks for the job, and also like Essence’s version for a budget-friendly dupe. If I’m going out or have a more formal event to go to, I’ll do a cat eye with Clinique’s liquid liner–this is definitely the easiest liquid liner I’ve found! It’s not too messy and it doesn’t dry immediately, so it gives you time to correct with a q-tip if needed!
Also–I’m not sure why it took me so long to figure out that I needed to be filling in my eyebrows. I have VERY light eyebrows that I often kind of forget about. It’s like they fade into the background (a background I totally neglected for the first, like, 25 years of my life.) When I finally figured out how much of a difference defined eyebrows made, I started filling them in. I don’t buy anything fancy–I use Essence’s brow pencil and it does the trick! I’ve also heard amazing things about Glossier’s Boy Brow. If I ever try that out, I’ll let you know how I like it!

Step 6: Curl lashes
If you’ve never tried an eyelash curler, please do me and yourself a favor, and buy one. It makes THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE. When my lashes aren’t curled, you can’t even tell I have eyelashes–they’re so stick straight. I look like a boy. I truly do not feel beautiful if my eyelashes aren’t curled. Okay, you believe me now, right?

Step 7: Apply mascara
My favorite mascaras are Benefit’s–I think they really nail the full lashes thing, and their formula doesn’t get ALL over my eyelids like some mascaras do. (Maybe I just have really weird eyelids??) I like both their “They’re Real” and “Bad Gal” formulas. If you’re looking for a drugstore buy, Maybelline’s has a good alternative.

Step 8: Finish with lips
At this point, I’ll usually apply some type of lip balm and exfoliate my lips if they’re feeling a little dry. (I actually use my sonic facial brush for this, haha!) then I’ll get dressed and go about my business, and let the lip balm really soak in. You don’t want to apply lip balm right before your lipstick, because then it will smear all over and won’t have the same holding power.
When I’m ready to head out the door, I’ll apply my final lip products. If it’s daytime and I’m super casual, this could be something as simple as a swipe of tinted lip balm (I really love Vaseline’s Rose Lips) or if I’m going full on color, I love this combination for major staying power:
1. Apply a lip primer: my go-to version is MAC’s. Honestly, I’ve never tried anything else because this kind works really well. It also helps avoid drying your lips out too much, especially if you’re applying a matte lipstick.
2. Apply MAC Pro Longwear lip liner: You’ll want to find a color close to the color you’ll be applying to your lips–fill in your entire lip with the liner.
3. Finish with lip color: my favorite lipsticks are made by MAC (Lady Danger and Relentless Red are my favorites!) and NARS (Cruella is my go-to shade for a night out!)–they always have the best colors! Clinique’s formulas are also great and go on really smoothly, so if you like a more hydrated feel, you might like their lipsticks best.
