Hi friends! Happy Tuesday!
If you saw my stories yesterday you know I have some mixed feelings around the Nordstrom sale this year.
On one hand, it feels weird (and inappropriate?) heavily pushing a sale with everything going on right now, especially when so many people are hurting financially.
On the other, for many, this is a bright spot and something to look forward to, a little bit of normalcy during a year where everything feels like it’s been turned upside down.
In talking with many of you, you’ve told me you’re looking forward to the sale now more than ever. It made me realize the importance of continuing to celebrate the little things and how much we all need something to get excited about. Honestly, as an influencer, it feels good to be able to look forward to creating that kind of content for you again, too! We all need a little more normalcy in our lives.
So, if you have the means and are looking forward to shopping the sale, as always, I plan to be a resource for you! If you are skipping it this year–that’s great too! There’s no need for FOMO–there is nothing that is part of this sale that will alter your life forever––that you absolutely HAVE to have or can’t get anywhere else. 😂 PERSPECTIVE.
My Nordstrom Sale Preview Picks + Tips to Shop the Sale
As a reminder, anytime you click through one of my links and make a purchase (any purchase–it doesn’t just have to be the item I link–as long as it’s made within the same browser window and not via the Nordstrom app!) I get a commission on that total sale at no cost to you. The Nordstrom sale is a big revenue period for me every year (last year, 13% of my annual affiliate income came from a handful of days from the Nordstrom sale!) and your purchases through my links are the reason why.
Please never feel pressured to use my affiliate links, but if you do, it is incredibly appreciated, because the more $$ I make from affiliate commission, the less brands partnerships I need to take on, and the more time I can spend creating content for YOU and not for brands! 💛
First, I’ll jump in with my quick tips on how to best shop the sale (early access starts today!), then I’ll get into my initial picks!
Make a list of what you need or want
The best way to always approach any “shopping” period is to make a list of what you want. This will help avoid unnecessary spending or impulse buying.
For example, I’m excited to purchase some cozy basics and some other fun items to make quarantining a little more fun this season–I definitely want a new PJ set, some loungewear basics, comfy long sleeve tees–etc.
What I don’t need are new booties or any other “outside shoes” for that matter. On the rare occasion that I will be wearing booties this fall, my pairs from last year are JUST fine. 😂 Knowing this ahead of time allows me to keep focused on only the things I want and nothing I don’t need!
Preview the sale and create your “wishlist”
Nordstrom has the entire sale previewed on their site right now! Plus, there’s a great feature on their site that lets you create a wishlist, so you can save and quick-reference all your favorite items as soon as you’re able to shop the sale.
On each product page, where you’d normally click “add to cart” you’ll see an “add to wishlist” button. I highly recommend perusing the sale offerings and creating your wishlist now, so when you’re able to shop the sale, you’ve already done the work of going through and marking everything you’re interested in.
That way, you’ll be able to quickly add to cart and check out, vs wasting time sorting through everything and risking an item you love selling out! This takes all the pressure off of shopping!
Mark your calendar for key dates!
Sale access launches in tiers, according to your Nordy Club status (AKA how much per year you spend at Nordstrom). To shop early access, you must be a cardholder, but you may be eligible to shop even earlier depending on your status level. This is one of the biggest perks to being a Nordstrom cardholder/rewards member, in addition to being able to earn points for each dollar you spend.
To check what status level you are and therefore when you can shop the sale, sign into your Nordstrom account, and click “The Nordy Club” and you’ll find it! (Note, “Influencer” ambassador level actually has nothing to do with being an influencer, so I don’t know why they chose that name. 😂 Think of these as like, “Gold, Silver, Platinum” etc.) I am an “Ambassador” level, so I’ll be able to order August 7th!
Consider teaming up with a friend with higher Nordy Club status
It’s definitely worth asking around your friend group to find out who has the highest Nordstrom status! Consider asking your friend to put your purchases on her card (and just venmo/quickpay her) so you get the best possible access and a better chance of snagging your favorite items before they sell out! She also gets lots of points that way, so she’ll probably be happy to help you out with this! 😆
BUY MULTIPLE SIZES
Things sell out fast during the sale, and they are never restocked unless returns come in. So if you see something you like, but aren’t sure which size to get, buy it in two sizes. Nordstrom has the best return policy of any retailer ever–plus free returns–so you can return the size that doesn’t work, but if you wait for it to ship to you before you realize you need a new size, there’s a very high chance that item will be gone OR won’t be on sale anymore once the prices return to normal! (Tip: You can return any Nordstrom purchase to Nordstrom rack, too–if that’s easier for you!)
My picks from the 2020 Nordstrom Sale:
This year, I’m focusing on basics and essentials–things that are going to make the quarantine life just a little bit more joyful, more comfortable, and more fun. Everything you want but nothing you don’t need. (Ahem, booties, purses, fancy coats–maybe we’ll see you in 2021? 😂) Read below for my highlights!
Loungewear, Athleisure, & Pajamas
I don’t know if it’s because the loungewear selection is particularly lit this year, you know, because #Pandemic, or if I just think it is because I’ve never paid that much attention to loungewear before this point in time, but regardless, there were a lot of great loungewear staples and basics that caught my eye.
My favorite nice pajama sets–the Nordstrom lingerie Moonlight pajamas (which I’m wearing in the photo above), are always a #1 pick for the sale each year.
I have purchased a pair each year for the last couple of years (I have a short pair and a long pair) and definitely want to get another new color! Also, I am very excited about this matching loungewear set that is so cute and will definitely bring me joy when it gets cold and not leaving the house–putting this on will totally count as “getting dressed” 😆
I also LOVE the look of this Barefoot Dreams loungewear set that will essentially be half off. I know, “Barefoot Dreams” can be an automatic eye roll trigger (because what blogger isn’t OBSESSED WITH BAREFOOT DREAMS?! 😜) OK it turns out they are because it’s actually that great. I finally gave in and bought a Barefoot Dreams bathrobe (sadly won’t be part of the sale) at the beginning of quarantine. And this stuff is like wearing a cloud. I don’t even care if I’m a walking cliché–give me all the Barefoot everything. So I can’t wait to buy more. 😆
I also am eyeing some cute, classic joggers–like this fleece pair from BP for $24! Also on sale is this pair which I have from the holidays last year–they have a bunch more colors, and they are SO comfy! (However, they run big, so size down!) I am loving the tie dye colorway!!
For activewear, Zella, per usual, has a lot of items that will be marked down. It’s always a good time to snag a pair of their “Live in” leggings (which I wear more in winter than in summer bc they’re a more substantial legging). My favorite newer-to-me athleisure brand, Alo, also has some super cute leggings on markdown that I’ve been eyeing!
Let’s not pretend that jackets this year are the sought after fall staples that they once were, so I didn’t really spend a lot of time here. I did a quick-once-over though and did want to highlight a few items that I thought would be really good staples (if, in fact, you need such staples). Most noteworthy are the selection of Barbour jackets that are marked down. I’m assuming we’ll be doing a lot more outdoor fall activities than normal this year and these will come in handy while being a classic staple you own for decades. My Barbour coats are always one of my most-worn items in the spring and fall!
Perhaps the one that got me most excited was this $44 Thread & Supply (yes, the makers of WUBBY FLEECE!) coatigan. Essentially it’s a bathrobe disguised as a cardigan/coat so why on EARTH would I not want one of those?
Tops & Sweaters:
You better believe WUBBY FLEECE IS BACK! And in new colors! (I did a whole review on wubby right over here!) This is my #1 essential that I am always wearing around the house in the fall and winter! It’s marked down from $78 to $45 and I’m pretty sure in cost per wear it comes out to be -.24 cents per wear. 😜
If you’re looking for a cute striped tee, Caslon makes a great super lightweight one. I still have my striped Caslon tee from the sale 3 years ago and wear it all the time! Halogen also makes really soft long sleeve modal tees and I love the striped one this year! If you love a good supersoft tunic tee, Gibson makes great ones every year, so keep an eye out for those! (This one would also be great with bike shorts around the house!)
Another great comfy cozy essential is a waffle henley.
This one comes in many colors (including, of course, stripes!)
You know I’m always harping on how great slinky camisoles are for every season (cute on their own, cute layered under other things too!) and Halogen has one that is part of the sale that is always a good buy!
I think the one “nice buy” I’m most excited about is this cashmere hoodie. I’m not usually a hoodie kinda girl but I love that this one is classic and sophisticated! If you like the look but don’t want to spend that much, this sweater hoodie is a good dupe!
I also am hoping I can snag the classic Patagonia half-zip (I know, I’m the only girl in the Midwest that doesn’t already own one) for our camping trip in September! I’m going to buy one regardless but it would be great to get it at a discount if I can snag it before it’s gone!
You can see it’s a very overwhelming selection. 😆 Per usual, the Spanx leggings are part of the sale, and I love them because they’re as comfortable as leggings but actually look like you got dressed. An important distinction between them and the Commando leggings (which I also love, but probably not my pick of leggings for 2020): The Spanx faux leather leggings are still very breathable, they don’t really feel that “leather-like” but the Commando ones definitely look and feel more like true leather, therefore, they’re great for wearing in public but not nearly as comfortable as Spanx for lounge.
Also the only pair of jeans that even remotely excited me (not that the others aren’t cute, I just don’t think jeans are a very in-demand 2020 buy) was this pair of Levi’s 501’s, which is VERY cute. LBH though I probably won’t be buying any jeans because how often are we wearing jeans these days?
Accessories, shoes, gifts, and other stuff:
So you will notice that I have no bags on here–because wtf are purses even? Who needs those in 2020?
Shoes I was also meh on because where would we be wearing booties these days? Two pairs of shoes that DID catch my eye though are Vejas. (I love the look of them, especially this colorway.) And this pair of slip-on mules that would make great house shoes. I’m sure I’ll do another pass at shoes and come up with some more options. But as of now I’m just not very into shoes.
My beloved Ray Ban Hexagon sunnies and favorite silk pillowcase set is included in the sale. This Supergoop spray sunscreen set is also a steal and it’s my favorite clean sunscreen mist! I will be buying many sets of these in bulk bc it’s such a great deal. 😂
**No I am not pregnant 😂 but I do want to call your attention to a lot of the baby items on sale. Because some of them include the super expensive items that you (if you’re expecting) or your pregnant friends will have on their registry–I know this because like all my friends have babies. Items like an Uppababy Vista stroller or Tripp Trapp high chair–for like $100 off! They also have so many cute baby clothes and this cute little bib and feeding mat. So if you’re shopping for a shower, definitely look here!
Last but not least, this countertop garden may be the thing I am MOST excited for of the entire sale. Is this not the most 2020 purchase or what?!?
Bras & Undies:
I found myself arguably MORE drawn to bras and underwear this year more than any other. Probably because comfort has never before been so imperative? 😂 I don’t know, but there were a lot of good wireless bras that caught my eye. As well as two key pairs of underwear that I SWEAR by. It’s a good time to stock up on these because who wants to pay a bunch of money for underwear unnecessarily?
1. Hanky Panky low rise thongs–truly the best ever underwear, and they have a buy more save more deal. These are always one of the first things to sell out during the sale! And…
2. Commando invisible underwear, which is key under any flowy/semisheer dresses for summer, activewear, leather leggings, etc. They are super comfy, too, so you’ll want to wear them even if you aren’t concerned about VPL.
