Welcome back from the long weekend! I hope you were able to take the last few days to unwind and soak in the beginning of summer! Also, hooray–it’s already Tuesday!
It was such an AMAZING weekend here in Chicago–it could not have been a better kick-off to the summer season. Honestly, I had been feeling kind of “meh” and it was exactly the kind of weekend I needed to recharge. We spent a ton of time outside, we grilled out, we soaked up every bit of the sun that we could, read books, ate some popsicles, cleaned the house, and more.
As always, Kendall and I are starting off this short week with another edition of On a High Note- a snippet of inspiring, lighthearted and/or helpful ideas to try, read, make, cook, drink, do, and so on! (If you missed our previous editions, make sure to catch up!)
Here’s to a wonderful week ahead! Let’s dive into this week’s roundup!
“I am CRYING laughing at this hysterical take on modern love essays as written by nursery rhyme characters. Honestly, how are people so creative? This will definitely give you a giggle this morning!” –Jess
“Now that the unofficial summer season has begun, it’s time to shake things up in the kitchen! Bust out the grill, fresh fruits, and summer flavors! Need recipe ideas? Check out this delicious roundup via The Everygirl!” — Kendall
“So, our European vacation plans are postponed–but domestic travel isn’t! What better time to plan a road trip? Neal and I are seriously considering renting an RV and road-tripping across the US. This Travel & Leisure list has an awesome roundup of scenic routes to take. We’re thinking the Badlands of South Dakota because it’s the perfect doable distance to and from Chicago, and when else are we going to see South Dakota!? (Granted, I do think we might have to do a shorter weekend trial-run first to make sure I really have what it takes to sleep in an RV for several nights 😂)” ––Jess
“For better or worse (and most likely a combination of the two), the last couple of months have changed your romantic relationship. From everyday annoyances to bonding more than ever and much more, this Self article rounds up common experiences from both therapists and everyday people when it comes to personal relationships! Rest assured, whatever you’re experiencing right now–you aren’t alone!” — Kendall
Fresh Peonies because it’s Peony season!
“It’s Peony Season! 🙌🏻 Olivia’s Market, the small neighborhood grocer we’ve been shopping at most often during the Pandemic, has the most stunning flowers––including the most gorgeous Peonies! I picked up a bunch on our latest trip there this past weekend. It’s crazy what flowers can do to brighten your mood, isn’t it?
If you haven’t picked up flowers in a while, I highly recommend doing so on your grocery trip this week (look for peonies!) You could also order them for yourself, from yourself, from a delivery website!
I always recommend Flowers for Dreams if you’re looking for a local Chicago florist.” –Jess
“Taking a cue from The Shedd’s insta-famous penguins, no doubt, the latest zoo animals to visit empty cultural destinations are these three penguins from the Kansas City Zoo. Bubbles, Maggie and Berkley spent some time at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. According to the museum’s executive director, Julián Zugazagoitia, they were more taken with Caravaggio than they were with Monet.” — Kendall
Watercolor painting! My watercolor book, The Joy of Watercolor is finally back in stock!!
“I got this adorable watercolor book, The Joy of Watercolor, at the beginning of the pandemic and it quickly sold out. Luckily, they did another round of printing to meet demand and it is now back in stock! I highly recommend–painting is incredibly cathartic and it’s so fun to try something new! Note: The book does not come with supplies. I’ll definitely do a whole post on my watercolor supplies, but in the meantime, this blog post is a really helpful place to start!” –Jess
