Oh my gosh, can you believe it!?
The past few days for us have been a little crazy but so much fun! As you’ve probably seen on Instagram stories, we’ve spent the past several days with my family in Oregon! First we went to Bend and hung out with my sister, mom, and my nephews and niece. Then, we drove over to Portland and stopped to see my dad, Aunt, Uncle and cousin on the way! We rarely get a lot of time to spend in Oregon. So it’s always a bit of a whirlwind to try and squeeze in as many visits with family as we can!
New Years Eve was extra special. It was our first as a married couple. We stayed in the same hotel as we did for our wedding. So that was really awesome. (And slightly more enjoyable because, you know, this time, we weren’t running around trying to re-plan an entire wedding in a few days.)
We got home from Portland yesterday. So today will definitely be spent catching up, reflecting on 2017, and planning where we want to take the blog in the coming year. (Such an exciting time!)
But today, as you’re thinking about new beginnings, I wanted to share my resolutions on a particular topic that I know is a popular one here on GG–skincare.
If you’ve been reading for awhile, I have gone through my fair share of skin issues that ebb and flow, sometimes with no rhyme or reason. It’s hard as a 29 year old to still be dealing with things like adult acne, but, what can you do? I’ve learned so much about skincare over the past year, and it’s a topic that I’m pretty passionate about!
I get so many skincare related questions from you (which is also nice, to know that I’m not the only 29 year old with complex skincare issues ?). So I thought it would be cool to share my goals/resolutions for my skincare routine in 2018. Also, I’m sharing what I think is honestly my coolest skincare discovery yet. I cannot WAIT for you to try it!
Let’s start from the top! Here are my skincare resolutions, in no particular order:
1. Look at my skin from a wholistic perspective
Honestly, until I realized that the pill was the catalyst for my raging hormonal breakouts (and until I read this book) I really didn’t give much thought to how skin actually works, the important role it plays in the overall function of your body, and how what you put in your body is reflected in your skin. That has changed a LOT over the past few months.
If your skin is misbehaving, there is an underlying reason behind it. This past year has lead me to understand what I put in your body truly does affect your skin, and so many symptoms–like acne, to PMS, to even chronic disease, are closely tied to nutrition.
So, while it’s really easy to reach for the benzoyl peroxide and call it a day, I’ve been really trying to figure out the root of my skin issues, not just band-aid them with products. To treat the cause, not just the symptom.
So, in short, switching to a non-hormonal method of birth control (more on that here) has been a game-changer, but I still do get more minor, yet persistent breakouts, and have been testing out a few different things (and will continue to report on the findings!)–like swapping out clean pillow cases several times per week (I also ordered some anti-microbial pillow cases?! We’ll see how that works, but seeing as most of my breakouts are on one side of my face, I think that might have a lot to do with it) I’ve also been drinking spearmint tea to help balance hormones and therefore, reduce breakouts.
Essentially, the moral of the story is that in 2018, I’m going to continue being a detective rather than turning a blind eye and hoping to band-aid the issues I’ve been having. I hope it inspires you to do the same!
2. Be religious about sunscreen EVERY. DAY.
My #1 regret from my teens and early twenties? Not enough wearing sunscreen. This past year, I’ve really started to see the fine lines show up that I was praying wouldn’t start surfacing until my thirties.
Honestly, I had never found a sunscreen product that didn’t make my face greasy, smell like the beach, or make my makeup peel off my face. I knew I needed something far better than what my SPF15 foundation provided, but I just didn’t think there was a product out there.
Then, Supergoop reached out to me and sent a few SPF products for me to try. I truly did not have high hopes–I mean, how can you when every sunscreen you’ve tried in your life has failed you from an everyday functionality perspective?
The second I tried their new “Unseen” sunscreen, I actually said the words, “OH. MY. GOD” out loud. This was FINALLY the product I had been waiting years for. (Ugh. If only I had this in high school. I would have a lot less fine lines on my face right about now ?)
It’s not every day I get this excited to tell you guys about a product, but I am honestly begging you to buy this today. You will remember this advice in 15 years and thank me. If I’m lucky enough to have a daughter one day, this will be the first product that I incorporate into her beauty routine.
It’s oil-free, weightless, completely clear, and leaves no yucky residue. It rubs into your skin with a velvety texture and acts as a primer for your makeup. It is truly AMAZING.
Plus, it’s completely safe too and made with plant-based ingredients (and none of the bad stuff, which is reassuring because sunscreen can be one of the toxic things on your bathroom shelf).
“Unseen” is made with red algae, which offers protection against visible light, including blue light (you know, like from your computer? That’s damaging too!) Meadowfoam Seed Oil adds hydration and helps to even skin texture, while Diatomaceous Earth absorbs perspiration and excess oil. It also has Frankincense extract, which is an anti-inflammatory. The brand is cruelty-free, too!
I also made Neal try it (obviously, because he also refuses to wear sunscreen for the reasons I listed above, and the fact that white sunscreen always gets stuck in his stubble.) Because this is clear and doesn’t leave behind any residue, he also gave it two thumbs up!
They make a ton of different products too–here are some of my other favorites:
This product is perfect to stash in your bag when you need to re-apply on the go, or to simply act as a setting powder (great for those with oily or combination skin!) Not only does it help absorb shine, but adds SPF45 and adds environmental protection, too! (The two main causes of aging. I often imagine that I’d still look 15 if I had started using this in high school.)
I absolutely LOVE this three-in-one makeup setting mist. It sets your makeup to ensure it stays in place, helps control shine, and protects rays with SPF50. It also contains antioxidant-rich rosemary extract, which is so refreshing and is the best mid-day pick-me-up!
Moral of the story, while I may have been late to the everyday sunscreen game, but I can still make a big difference in preventing further damage. I don’t want to look like an old lady, and I certainly don’t want skin cancer! Now that I’ve actually found sunscreen products I love, being religious about my sunscreen application is probably my #1 goal from here on out.
This non-greasy formula is perfect for every day. Whether you’re going to the beach, going for a run, or just going about day to day life. It’s water and sweat resistant, too! I also really want to try their “City Sunscreen Serum” that provides not just sun protection, but protection against environmental pollution as well.

3. Continue to dive into the world of clean beauty and share my findings
In 2017 (mostly because of this book!) my eyes were opened to the scary facts about what are in most beauty products these days, and how much harm they can do–from causing cancer to affecting your fertility–and how many just as good alternatives there are out there that won’t negatively impact your body!
Did you know that The United States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products since 1938? (I first learned about that when I discovered this company!)
The European Union, however, has banned more than 1,300 chemicals in the product formulas of personal care products (like makeup, hair products, deodorant, and the like) and restricted the levels of over 250 more in such products.
Of those banned in Europe, guess how many the United States has banned?
Only 30. Partially.
More to love about American politics, right?
In 2018, I’m hoping to continue to educate myself on this issue and in the process. So hopefully I can help you find safer beauty products in the process.
I’ve been slowly swapping out my skincare and haircare products for “clean” versions–AKA, free of parabens, phlates, sulfates, and other dangerous ingredients. My favorite clean beauty brands, to name a few, are Beautycounter, Caudalie, Glossier, Native deodorant and most recently, Supergoop!
4. Make routine maintenance a priority
This sounds easy, but it’s really harder than it looks. It kind of ties back to my sunscreen point. Sticking to a routine religiously–every, single, day, is something I’m really working on. Often times, I’m so exhausted at the end of the day, I’ll skip my eye cream. Or I’ll forget to put on my anti-aging products because I’m simply just trying to stay awake. (Much like I can get too rushed in the morning to apply my sunscreen! Luckily the Supergoop products make that REALLY easy!)
Also, regularly seeing a professional really does make a big difference. Routine facials in France are treated akin to trips to the dentist or a doctor’s checkup. Why don’t we treat them the same here? I’ve started going to Leah Chavie regularly (her laser treatments have been so affective, as well as dermaplaning) and it really does make a huge difference in my skin. (If you’re local to Chicago, make sure to mention my name for 20% off your first treatment with her!)
Between eating a really clean diet and getting regular professional facial treatments before my wedding, my skin was truly transformed and the best it has ever been. I need to continue making it a priority in 2018 and not accept “being too busy” as an excuse. It’s hard to prioritize self-care, but I always liken it to the “oxygen mask” analogy on an airplane. You have to put on your own mask first in order to help others! You can’t be your best self for your family and friends if you aren’t willing to put yourself first every so often!
What are your skincare resolutions for 2018? I would love to hear them! And seriously, if nothing else–GO BUY THIS SUNSCREEN.
Big thanks to my new favorite skincare company, Supergoop! for partnering on this post! (and for making the best sunscreen products I’ve ever tried!)
