Sometimes Neal and I have weeks where we’re more “ships passing in the night” than anything else. He might be on the road for a work trip, I’m juggling photo shoots, trying to pound out blog posts until the wee hours of the morning–you get it, right? Whose life isn’t like that these days?
Aside from always being too busy for my own good, I also happen to be incredibly impatient. This means, I’m always looking for ways to do more with less time–the more ways I can accomplish a “two in one” or multi-task, the better. I’ve found a lot of little ways to do this over the years, but these are some of my favorites!
1. Designate a “shower playlist”
If you’re the kind of person who often loses track of time in the shower (UGH it’s so warm in there though!) I’m with you. It always helps me to create a playlist that serves as a timer–I’ll pick my favorite two to three songs and when they’re over, I know it’s time to get out!
And singing in the shower is pretty much the happiest start to a morning I can think of, right?
Neal and I are both partial to Feddy Wop…(“BABE. Trap Queen is over! Get out of the shower!”) Also, did you know if you search “shower playlist” on Spotify, so many playlists pop up?! There’s one called “Songs to sing to in the shower” that is pretty great.
Apply a beauty mask while you do your hair
I’m a big lover of face masks, but the tricky part is you need time to let them sit to really soak in the benefits, right? I used to struggle with this until I discovered that it was pretty easy to sneak a mask in while doing my hair. Apply one post-shower, and leave on while you blow dry (I just got this blow dryer and love it, if you’re in the market!) and style your hair (isn’t it funny how you can always find an extra 20 minutes if you get creative enough?) Some of my favorite masks: this one, this one, and this one!
Listen to the news while making breakfast
See my “perfect scrambled eggs” recipe in this post
Finding the news medium for you can be a bit of a goldilocks experience. I’m too impatient (and busy) to read news online, and I find TV news far too irritating and depressing–but NPR? I LOVE NPR. I’ve loved it forever, and I have a little routine of listening to Morning Edition while making breakfast. (You can listen to it via the NPR app!)
In my opinion, Morning Edition gives you the most well-rounded idea of what’s going on without being overwhelmingly depressing. (They always include a few fun lifestyle type features, too, that remind you that there are still lot’s of decent people in the world.)
The best part? It doesn’t require any extra time out of your day to get your news!
Make your products do double-duty
This is a big one, especially if you’re prepping for work AND the gym in the morning. Look for products that are two-in-ones and do double duty–they take up less room in both your gym back and on your shower shelf.
(Especially if you’re like us, and don’t HAVE a shelf in your shower. Then all the products just sit on the floor, pile up, and you can barely find room to move.)
Some of our new favorite “double duty” products are the P&G DUO’s–have you heard of them? They sent us a few to test out, and we love them!
They’re essentially a disposable loofah with body wash inside! (Which means TWO less clunky body wash bottles on the shower floor. Yessss.) One side is exfoliating, the other is smooth.
Neal loves them because they’re perfect for travel (he travels a ton for business)–no lugging [or spilling!] body wash in your suitcase, or in your gym bag! He also is pretty particular about using bar soap (woof) and the dreaded “cheap hotel body wash,” which dry his skin out like a desert, so he was pretty excited when he heard P&G sent an Old Spice DUO just for him 😉 They last up to 30 uses, and are available in Olay, and Ivory too.
Catch up on your commute
My mom and I have had this routine down for years, but it’s a nice way to always ensure I find time to talk to her. Whenever I’m heading out the door and walking from one spot to another, I call my mom.
She usually answers the phone with, “Where are you heading today?” You’re not doing anything else for the next 10-20 minutes on the way to work, why not call a loved one to catch up?
