If I were allowed to bring one cosmetic with me to a desert island, it would probably be an eyelash curler. (I suppose the smarter answer would be sunscreen. Okay, AFTER sunscreen, it would probably be an eyelash curler.)
Fun fact: I have the most stick-straight eyelashes out of anyone I know. They’re actually fairly long, they just are just SO straight. If I don’t curl them, you really can’t tell I have any eyelashes at all.
Luckily, I realized this at a very young age and an eyelash curler was one of the first things I reached for when I started wearing makeup in middle school. (Luckily my best friend, Tasha, is three years older than me, and was able to educate me on the importance of eyelash curlers.) Not only do they make your lashes look longer, but it’s the most effective way to look more awake in the morning! (I’ve also started wearing fake lashes more often–I’m obsessed with Sephora’s, which are reusable up to 5 times! More on that in another post!)
Anyway, I’ve tried a lot of eyelash curlers over the years–the fancy curling wands, the heated ones, the plastic ones with cushy handles, but my favorites by far are always the classic metal variety. I recently picked up this one by Charlotte Tilbury and I love that it’s rose gold! It adds a little something extra to my makeup bag 🙂 The little things, you know?
Sometimes the process of going about using an eyelash curler can be confusing. Do you put on mascara before or after? What about eyeliner? How long do you squeeze it for? How do you avoid pinching? Here’s the process I use to curl my lashes every day:
Step one:
If I’m applying eyeshadow, I’ll do that first prior to curling my lashes, as this won’t be affected by your curler like mascara or eyeliner would. However, applying mascara before curling makes lashes clumpy and makes lash breakage more likely. At least, in my opinion.
Step Two:
Then, curl lashes using an eyelash curler, squeezing at the base of the lashes. It shouldn’t be so close to your lid that it pinches, but it should feel tight. (Kind of like how it felt when your mom did your hair before school in the morning as a little kid.) Hold for five seconds, release, give one more squeeze, and repeat on the other side.
Tip: For extra staying power, give your lash curler a blast with your hair dryer to heat up the pad before curling your lashes. This will help them stay curled longer. (Think of this as the same science as behind your curling iron.) Just make sure the metal isn’t hot to the touch, so you don’t burn yourself.
Step three:
Then, apply eyeliner, followed by mascara. (Speaking of mascara, I just got this Dior version and it is SO. GOOD. Sometimes I wonder if pricey mascaras are worth the money but this one DEFINITELY is. ) Okay. You’re done!
What is your experience with eyelash curlers? Love ’em? Hate ’em? What other beauty recommendations would you like to see?
Agreed this is the most important of all beauty told or cosmetics! My mascara is works if I don’t curl my lashes before! Personally I love the lash curler by Sephora surprisingly enough, it’s amazing and better than any I’ve tried! You should give it a shot if you haven’t already?
Ohh nice I’ll have to give Sephora’s a try as well!!
For so many years I thought that you HAD to use an eyelash curler…I was convinced it was a necessary step in make-up application. It took me way too many years to realize that I have curly eyelashes and curling them wasn’t doing anything…. Oops….

UGH YOU ARE SO LUCKY!!
I haven’t used an eyelash curler in forever. I don’t even think I own one anymore! I’m not a morning person, so during the week I would describe my makeup routine as “survival mode.” Basically, whatever the minimum necessary components are so it can be quick and I can get out the door!
OMG you definitely need to try it! It’s a must in the morning because it makes you look about 10x more awake!
I just started using my eyelash curler again about a year ago and it makes SUCH a difference!! I usually actually do my eyeliner before I curl (I use a powder and brush) and haven’t found that the curler messes it up.

Doesn’t it make a huge difference!? I always find that it smudges my top liner if I do it afterwords, but I use a pencil, so I bet the powder has better staying power! That’s a great tip!
I love my eyelash curler! It’s actually the one I stole from my mom senior year of high school. I can’t wear mascara to work so I mostly just curl them and go. Super easy.
An eyelash curler is an essential! It makes me look and feel so much more pulled together. I love Sephora’s version – they have a few versions (each with a slightly different shape) and finding the right one made a big difference!
I’ve actually never used an eyelash curler, but I’m always trying to get them to look better, so adding this to my list of things to do!

I remember using an eyelash curler from the age of about 14 but then for some reason I stopped. (Probably because I had trouble fitting it into my makeup bag because it contained so many other essentials) Then, when I was around 53 or so, I was visiting my sister and asked my niece to help me with my makeup! (She was already a pro!) The first thing she had me use was her eyelash curler to “make me look more awake” You would never have guessed that she was only 14 and she now writes thegoldengirlblog! Thank you Jess, for reminding me to start using an eyelash curler yet again!
And thank you for a wonderful visit last week! I got out of Chicago at the exact right time!
