Welcome back to SECOND month of the Capsule Wardrobe Remix series! This month, I put together a Winter Capsule Wardrobe (see the full item list here) with some versatile staples that will take you even beyond the holidays!
Usually I post these on Fridays but I’m making an exception because Everlane (who makes this dress, which happens to be the star of the post, as well as several other items in this month’s capsule) is offering FREE two day shipping today only! (Wahoo!)
So, let’s jump into how awesome this dress is, shall we?
Here’s what I love about it, and what makes it so versatile:
Sleeveless: Sleeveless, you say? Not the most intuitive choice for a winter dress, but here’s why a sleeveless dress is going to be your best friend for winter: layering. The fact that you can layer so many different things underneath it makes it way more versatile than a long sleeved dress! Here I’ll show you three different ways to wear layers underneath your dress.
Slimming silhouette: This dress is a great shape–it’s short, so it hits you at a very flattering part of your thigh to elongate the leg, but isn’t too short to wear to the office. It’s also not too baggy or boxy–it subtly shows off your figure without being tight.
The best fabric: It’s made of this fabric called “Japanese Go Weave” which is crease resistant and also cooling–which means, yes, you will not want to DIE of heat stroke the second you set foot into the [office, restaurant, dinner party]–which is especially important if you’ll be layering things underneath it!
Great colors: I’ve already decided that I’m also ordering it in black–but it comes in a really pretty crimson too which will be perfect for the holidays if green isn’t your thang!
The price: $78? REALLY? Cheap enough to buy two colors!
The quality: Everything I’ve purchased from Everlane has been very high quality, and this dress is no exception!
Ethically made: One of my favorite things about the company is that they’re super transparent with everything they make and go out of their way to make routine audits at their factories to make sure the employee satisfaction is high and that the working conditions are up to par. You can actually read about the factory who makes this dress right here!
Sizing tips: Runs TTS, I’m wearing a size 0, but I will say it’s a bit tighter in the chest/arm holes than some other dresses, so if you tend to need more room in that area, I would size up!
Okay, cool, so you get why I love the dress so much. Let’s talk about the other items I used to style these looks:
One Dress, Four Ways
The Item List:
CAMEL WRAP COAT:
I recently got this camel coat from Ann Taylor and I am absolutely loving it! I’m confident that it will be one of my most favorite purchases of the entire season. It’s beautiful, chic, and most importantly–warm! I’ve been wearing it non-stop lately, and it’s even warm enough to still remain your “going out coat” all winter when you’re all dressed up and need a coat to go with your pretty dress.
Styling it: I wear it wrapped with the belt tied, or left open with the belt tied in a knot in the back (like you would a trench!)
Sizing: Runs TTS, I’m wearing XS.
Barbour Quilted Beadnell:
The Quilted Beadnell is great if you love the classic, preppy, quilted look but don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for a Burberry quilted jacket, this could be a good option! Granted, it’s not completely comparable, because of the corduroy collar, it’s a bit more casual, but still–a great dupe if I say so! I love that you can turn up the sleeves and have the plaid underneath as well! This version has a polar quilt lining, so it’s also extremely warm! You can also purchase a liner to go underneath this one as well for extra warmth. This one also comes in several colors, which I’ll link in the widget below.
Where to buy: My recommended places to purchase Barbour are Tuckernuck and Nordstrom, but they are sold a lot of different places! I would check both of these because they tend to stock different sizes/colors at certain times.
Sizing: Run small, size up. I’m wearing a US4 and I usually wear an XS in jackets.
Striped tissue turtleneck:
Probably my #1 most worn piece in my winter wardrobe is a tissue turtleneck. (I also have it in grey and wear that one frequently as well!) It’s a super thin material, so it’s really more of a cozy version of a t-shirt. These make the best base layers and I wear them under everything for both visual interest as well as warmth. If stripes aren’t your thing, they come in lot’s of other colors too!
Silk button-down blouse:
I’ve had this silk button-down for what feels like forever, and it’s rare for a week to go by without me pulling it out of the closet. I actually wrote a whole post about how much I love it right over here! It’s perfect for work (you can wear a nude bra underneath with no show-through, or a nude cami, if you’d prefer) and for date night, I love wearing a black lace bralette underneath (it’s not see through-just a hint!) OR you could even wear the lace camisole underneath! Basically, its my go-to top year-round for pretty much all occasions, and it’s a really great price too!
Another sweater that makes me feel incredibly chic and timeless–the black turtleneck (this one is on sale for $29 right now at J.Crew Factory!!) I also love the button details on this one from Ann Taylor, and this one is always a classic. It’s flattering, slimming and can be dressed up or dressed down very easily! Black sweaters are also key for travel–they don’t show any dirt, stains or spills!
Over the Knee boots:
The crown jewel of my wardrobe: my Stuart Weitzman Lowland boots. I wear them SO. MUCH. And sadly, I can confidently say there is no budget-friendly duplicate out there. I have searched high and low! They are expensive for a reason–no other thigh-high, tie-in-the-back boots that I’ve found really hug your leg like these do.
However–good news–I DO love the budget-friendly Blondo Olivia boots! They don’t look exactly the same, (they aren’t as tall, and they stretch in the back vs. tie) but if you want a boot that is going to hug your leg in a similar fashion, this is a great choice! They’re also waterproof, and come in grey as well! I wear these boots when I want to save my Stuart Weitzmans from crazy weather!
Knee high heeled boots:
I just recently got these knee-high boots from Splendid (you saw me style them over here!) and I absolutely love the look of them. They look so cute with skirts and dresses as well as jeans! Best of all, they are SO comfy. I walked all over San Francisco in them one day and zero blisters or toe pinching! They come in black as well as brown–Sam Edelman makes a similar pair in a lighter tan color that is beautiful as well! Linking more below too:
Another item from Everlane (they are really the MVP brand of this capsule!) I got these oxfords last spring and wore them all the way through May–and I was SO excited to pull them out again for fall! They’re truly one of the most beautifully crafted pair of shoes that I own. I love that they’re so classic and preppy looking, but the slightly pointed toe provides a more modern, minimalistic twist.
They’re back again! Yes, you also saw them in last month’s capsule, but you know the saying–if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Every woman should have one pair of classic, sleek, black pumps. I adore these Sam Edelmans. (Mine are actually slinkbacks from a few years ago but these are the current version. There is also a version with an ankle strap!) The price point on these is great, they are super comfy, and they are so versatile, you will wear them year-round from everything from work to weddings to dates and everything in between.
Leopard print clutch:
I love this leopard clutch and wear it everywhere. (Nordstrom actually has a TON of different leopard clutches right now!) I’m a huge fan of it for going out because it brightens up even the most basic outfit. Plus, it’s such a steal for less than $50 and it looks and feels like the designer version.
Leather Madewell Transport Tote:
The Madewell Transport tote making the capsule wardrobe cut comes as a shock to absolutely none of you, I am sure. It’s my everything bag. Work, travel, groceries–whatever, this is always the bag I’m reaching for and it comes in several sizes, styles and colors as well.
I was so on the fence when I purchased this crossbody (it’s Rebecca Minkoff’s ‘Love’ bag in size small!) as to whether or not I would wear it, but I’d have to say it’ snow become one of my most reached for bags. I really love the fact that it’s olive, which is a neutral, but a really fun mix-up from the typical tan or grey. Although my exact version is no longer available, this one is nearly identical, just slightly larger!
Now, let’s get into these four looks!
Winter Capsule Wardrobe:
How to style one festive dress four ways
Classic Holiday Party:
Let’s start with the most intuitive way to wear this dress, yes? You can wear it all by its sweet little self with your favorite pair of classic pumps (I love love this pair) to just about any holiday party this year! (Don’t forget the red lipstick! The color I’m wearing here is “Russian Roulette by RMS Beauty–I love the long-lasting formula that doesn’t dry out your lips. A safe beauty brand, too!)
The cherry on top? A festive hair bow! I can’t get enough of hair bows and think they are so darn cute. You can tie any old ribbon around your ponytail, but Nordstrom also sells some adorable versions (with velvet ribbon, too!) that affixed to hair-ties for a no-fail bow every time!
When you head out the door, a chic camel coat pairs perfectly to keep you toasty warm to and from the uber 😉
Heading to a cute but casual function this month? Layer a tissue turtleneck underneath the dress I absolutely adore these knee-high suede boots as well! They bring so much personality to the outfit, and they have a small heel to make them work for slightly more formal occasions, but are comfortable to walk in for miles! Finally, the quilted Barbour Beadnell coat is the perfect top layer to finish off the casual look. (Still cold? You can always wear black tights underneath! I’d go with opaque ones!)
Business Casual Office Meeting:
This is one of my favorite looks of this post! I absolutely love the “smart chic” vibe this combination gives off. I’ve had these oxfords for over a year now and I wear them from Fall through Spring (they have to be retired for summer, but I was SO excited to pull them out again!) They’re a great office shoe because they’re a super polished alternative to a ballet flat. Button your silk button down all the way to the top, and layer it underneath for a very polished result! (You can also do this with a crisp white button down!)
As for the bag, you know by now this is one of my #1 bags in my whole wardrobe. It goes just about everywhere with me and is truly the perfect work bag!
Finally, circling back to that camel coat again! It’s pretty darn perfect to wear to the office and is polished enough for business meetings. (At first I was like “I’m wearing this coat too much”–but then I decided that no, I wasn’t! I actually DO wear it for all of these occasions, and I thought it was important to demonstrate its versatility!)
Winter Date Night:
You know I’m a sucker for any dress paired with OTK boots. It’s just the easiest way to look ultra pulled-together and stylish! I went for a black on black theme here, with a black turtleneck sweater layered underneath, which feels very modern and sleek to me.
Because this was a date night look, I pulled out my old trusty skinny leopard belt (mine’s old, but similar here)–which is my go-to trick for shortening a dress a couple of inches! Of course, this is totally optional, makes it just a little bit sexier for a night out, and I think the leopard adds a fun twist of pattern. (And yes, if you were wondering–here’s proof that the camel coat is perfect for date night, too ;-))
